Princess Ileana is engaged

May 4, 1931

The engagement of Princess Ileana, the younger sister of King Carol II of Roumania, was announced tonight at Schloss Breisgau in Freiburg, Germany.  The princess is to marry Archduke Anton of Austria, 30, a "well-known airman," according to the New York Times.   He is the son of the late Archduke Leopold Salvator.   His brother, former Archduke Leopold, was involved in a court suit in New York City last year "over a famous diamond necklace belonging to Archduchess Maria Theresa."

Archduke Anton lives in Barcelona, Spain, and it is "understood that Ileana first met him while touring the country last summer" with her mother, the Dowager Queen Marie.    Marie's sister, Beatrice, is married to Infante Alfonso de Orleans-Borbon, a cousin of King Alfonso XIII.

It is believed that this engagement "was dictated by affections rather than by reasons of state."

Princess Ileana and Archduke Anton will be married in Bucharest in June.  King Carol has already telegraphed his consent for the marriage.   The announcement was made at Schloss Breisgau, which belongs to the Prince of Hohenzollern, one of Ileana's cousins.
