Former King Alfonso XIII of Spain and his wife, Victoria Eugenia, met tonight for the first time since 1934, according to a wireless dispatch sent to the New York Times. They sat together at a dinner hosted by the King and Queen of Italy, held at the Quirinal Palace.
Victoria Eugenia, and her younger daughter, Infanta Maria Cristina, arrived his afternoon for the wedding of King Vittorio Emanuele's youngest daughter, Princess Maria, and Prince Luigi of Bourbon-Parma.
Queen Ena and Infanta Maria Cristina are staying at the Quirinal Palace.
Tonight's meeting "was believed to represent one stage in Premier Benito Mussolini's desire to restore the monarchy in Spain" should the Rebels win. This belief was "strengthened by the arrival of a special emissary" with a message from Generalissimo Francisco Franco.
But those close to King Alfonso "still deny reports of a reconciliation" between the king and the queen.
