Princess Olga loses gems at New Year's Party

January 3, 1931

Princess Olga, the wife of the cousin of King Alexander, lost a jeweled gold handbag at the New Year's Ball at the American Legation in Belgrade, according to the New York Times.  The handbag contained a "highly valuable diamond-studded cigarette case, which was a gift from the King," has not been recovered.

American minister John Dynely Prince is "greatly disturbed" by the incident.
Nearly all of the diplomatic corps and "a number of high State officials attended the ball," which was "furthered honored by the presence" of the king's cousin, Prince Paul, his wife, Princess Olga, and her sister, Princess Marina of Greece.  The evening "grew every animated," and Princesses enjoyed themselves very much, and "danced nearly every dance."

According to an ancient custom, at midnight all the lights were turned off for a few minutes.  After the lights were switched on again, the dancing resumed.   The royal party began to leave at 1 a.m., and Princess Olga was seen looking for her bag, first casually, and then "anxiously."  She then announced that the bag had disappeared.

The entire crowd began searching the floor for the gold mesh bag, "studded with diamonds and other stones," but the bag was not found.  Several guests volunteered to be searched but "in view of the implied reflection on the honor of the foreign diplomats and other distinguished guests"  this suggestion was rejected.   Only the servants and members of the orchestra were searched, "which revealed nothing."
