The Empress of Austria was scheduled to pay a private visit to Windsor Castle today, according to The Times, but to due to "slight indisposition," was reluctantly "compelled to abandon her intention," reports The Times. Her youngest daughter, Archduchess Marie Valerie, and her attendants, left London this morning by Great Western train and arrived at Windsor at 11:30 a.m., and walked to the Castle. The archduchess and her party were "shown through the State and other apartments," and they also visited the Albert and St. George's Chapels. They lunched at the White Hart Hotel, and after visiting the Frogmore Mausoleum, the Imperial party returned to London.

Marlene was Queen Victoria fond of the Empress? Did they write letters? Did she have any particular opinion of her, or was their relationship a strictly courtly and formal one between a sovereign and a foreign consort? How about Crown Princess Frederick, who lived closer to Austria than Queen Victoria?
