Hopes "uniting two monarchist factions in Spain appeared shattered today," when the Traditionalists, also known as the Carlists, announced a new pretender to the throne in place of the 87-year-old Don Alfonso Carlos, reports the Associated Press.
The new Carlist pretender is Prince Xaxier Carlos of Bourbon-Parma, 48, a nephew of Alfonso Carlos, and son of Duke Roberto of Bourbon-Parma and Infante Maria Antonia of Portugal.
Xavier, who is a brother of the former Empress Zita of Austria, lives in Astria, with his wife, the former Princess Magdalene of Bourbon-Busset, and their four children.
