Plans for Manoel to marry Kaiser's daughter

March 5, 1908

Lisbon newspapers are reporting "that negotiations are afoot to bring about a marriage" between King Manoel II of Portugal and Princess Victoria Luise of Prussia, the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, according to a Los Angeles Times dispatch.

The Kaiser will discuss the proposal when he makes his "promised visit of condolences" to Queen Amelie.  Portuguese officials are refusing to discuss the report.

King Manoel II came to the throne last month after the assassination of his father, King Carlos  and his older brother Crown Prince Luiz Felipe.   The young king turn eighteen last November.  Princess Viktoria Luise will celebrate her 16th birthday in September.
