Big news Aiko turns 7!

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20081202f2.html

Princess Aiko, the only child of the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan, turned 7 today. Her accomplishments have been noted in an official statement issued to the media.

A buddy playwright, perhaps. Male members of the Imperial family are raised to continue the male line. That's their job. Princesses are raised to be commoners because when a Japanese princess is married, she ceases to be a member of the Imperial family. She will have to move out of the Imperial compound, and she will have less contact with her parents and other members of the Imperial family. A former princess becomes a mere Mrs .. and she gets a birth certificate, as imperial births are not registered. But as a commoner, she will need a birth certificate. (When Masako and Kiko married into the Imperial family, their birth records were expunged due to their new exalted status.)
Don't expect the succession law to change any time soon .. or even in the next century.
