Lord Harewood to sell more property

January 6, 1951

The Earl of Harewood's agents "disclosed today that more of the nobleman's estate will be sold at auction to pay his taxes," according to the Associated Press.  Lord Harewood, 27, is the nephew of King George VI.
He has been "selling his holdings for many months," in order to "keep ahead of the British tax collectors."  The levies on his estate, after the death of his father in 1947, were "so high" that the earl has had to sell "much property to keep a little."
Lord Harewood plans to sell the Goldsborough estate near Knaresborough, Yorkshire, which was his boyhood home, and where "King George V and Queen Mary visited to see him christened."
The estate is one of the his "smaller holdings," and includes 1000 acres "divided into small farms, houses and Goldsborough Hall," which was for many years the home of Lord Harewood's mother, the Princess Royal.
The estate's tenants have already received letters from the estate's trustees informing them of the necessity to sell the property.  Lord Harewood wanted his tenants to know that he feels "the severance of his family with this estate."
In November, Lord Harewood announced that he would sell 6,000 acres of the Harewood estate in West Riding, and in June, 7,000 acres of a 22,000 acre holding "near Leeds was disposed of by auction."
Lord Harewood said he planned to retained Harewood House, near Leeds.  He also hoped to maintain the estate as "it was left to him by his father," but the burden of death duties is so heavy that I am left with no alternative."
The Earl of Harewood is 13th in line to the British throne.  He is the first grandchild of King George V and Queen Mary.
