The Duke of Orleans and Archduchess Dorothea are married

November 5, 1896

Prince Louis Philippe Robert, Duke of Orleans, was married today to Archduchess Maria Dorothea Amelia of Austria,  The ceremony was performed at the Hofburg chapel at 11 a.m., in the presence of  Emperor Franz Joseph, the Queen of Portugal, sister of the bridegroom, and "a number of Austrian and foreign royalties," reports The New York Times.

The procession began at the state apartments and ended at the chapel.  The order was as follows:  the Duke of Orleans, accompanied by his uncle, the Duke of Chartres, and Archduke Joseph; the bride, accompanied by the Countess of Paris, the groom's mother, and Archduchess Clotilde of Austria; Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Amalia of Portugal, the Duke of Connaught and the Duchess of Aosta, the Duke of Aosta and Archduchess Maria Josepha of Austria.

The Duke of Connaught represented his mother, Queen Victoria, and the Duke of Aosta represented the King of Italy.
The procession entered the chapel "amid a flourish of trumpets and the rolling of drums," according to the Chicago Daily Tribune, "where they were received by the Archbishop of Vienna, "who sprinkled the processionists with holy water."

The bride and bridegroom knelt at a prie-dieu. The wedding rings were blessed and then handed to the couple on a golden salver.

After placing "the rings on each other's fingers, the bridal pair clasped hands were again sprinkled with holy water."

The wedding mass included a Te Deum.  At the conclusion of the wedding ceremony, the bride and groom led the procession back to the apartments for a reception.
