Bulgaria awaits birth of an heir

January 7, 1933

Bulgarians await "with the deepest interest" the birth of an heir to Queen Giovanna. She is attended daily by physicians at the royal palace in Sofia. This will be the first child for King Boris III and Queen Giovanna. They were married in Italy in 1930. When King Boris III married the former Princess Giovanna of Italy in 1930, the Vatican required that the King agree to raise the couple's children as Roman Catholic, even though Bulgaria's state religion is Orthodox. It will be interesting to see if the Orthodox sovereign keeps to the agreement if Giovanna gives birth to a son.
