The Princess of Wied wasn't so nice, after all
The German newspapers were full of glowing eulogies of the life of the Dowager Princess of Wied who died at Neuwied on March 22. The Princess, who was born Princess Marie of Nassau Weilburg, was the widow of Hermann, Prince of Wied, who died in 1864.
Marie was survived by her two eldest children, Elisabeth, the Queen Consort of Roumania, and Wilhelm, Prince of Wied, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In her most recent column, the Marquise de Fontenoy notes that the Princess "was far from being as saintly, as portrayed, at any rate in her younger years." The late Prince Bismarck, if he were still alive, "would have had some sardonic remarks" to add to her obituaries.
Princess Marie's great wealth came from the "public gambling tables," at Wiesbaden. Gambling was abolished by Prussia after the war of 1866. Before this, gambling was the "chief source of revenue to the ducal house of Nassau."
The Princess was also "far from being a kind or devoted mother to her daughter," Queen Elisabeth of Roumania. Elisabeth's life as a "young girl was a singularly unhappy one." The only time that the young Princess was happy was the time she spent with Grand Duchess Helen of Russia, with whom "she was a great favorite."
In 1869, Princess Elisabeth married the future King Carol of Roumania. It has not been a happy marriage, which "culminated in a two years' separation from her husband," Elisabeth did not find any sympathy from her mother, "which she was entitled to demand."
The late Princess had a "pronounced talent for political intrigue," to which she "gave her full attention" to the time after the war of 1866, when her brother, Adolf, Duke of Nassau, lost his throne, and the primary source of her revenue, "namely, the gambling tables of Wiesbaden."
Her vitriol was aimed at Prince Bismarck, whom she regarded "as her most bitter foe." Bismarck, as the German Chancellor, managed to obtain a "quantity of correspondence by her and confidential papers connecting her name with a member of her household." It is "generally believed" that she married the man "secretly after her husband's death."
The knowledge that the Chancellor had her private papers in his possession and that "he was prepared to make the most of them necessary." This threat put a "sudden stop" to the Princess' political activities. She quickly developed into an "austere and terribly bigoted old woman, whose charities and philanthropies, which extensive, were of the most despotic and tyrannic character." She had no real "charity of spirit."
Prince Bismarck also put a stop to the "political intrigues of the old Princess Josephine of Hohenzollern by the same means." In fact, there were quite a number of his "petticoat enemies," members of royal and princely families, whom he was able to "render harmless to his policy and to his interests." He was able to obtain "awkward evidence, mostly in the shape of correspondence concerning indiscretions of their earlier years."

Princess Mafalda of Bulgaria's wedding date set
Princess Mafalda of Bulgaria and Marc Abousleiman will marry in Palma de Mallorca on May 28, reports Point de Vue magazine.
The Princess is the eldest child of Prince Kyril of Bulgaria and Rosario Nadal and the first of King Simeon of Bulgaria's grandchildren to marry,
Mafalda and Marc first met as children when they attended the same school in London, but their romance began in Boston, where the princess was studying music and Marc was a student at Harvard.
The 27-year-old "crystalline-voiced" singer considers Palma to be one of her favorite places so it is no surprise that she is marrying on the island. Her mother is from Palma and her father, Prince Kyril, owns a summer home in Porreras, where Mafalda and her family spend every summer.
Prince Kyril and Princess Rosario have lived separate lives for many years but have not divorced.
The couple has decided against a formal religious wedding and will exchange vows in a simple civil ceremony.
It will be, according to Point de Vue, "intimate, and not with great pomp, just music and lots of love."

CROWN PRINCE ALEXANDER: ”THE WOUNDS ARE STILL HURTING”
![]() |
| @HRH Crown Prince Alexander |
" On the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the beginning of NATO aggression on Yugoslavia in 1999, HRH Crown Prince Alexander sent his message, that the innocent victims of this madness must never be forgotten, and that the consequences of this terrible aggression are still hurting.
“Twenty-three years have passed, and our people, our country, are still not fully recovered from the terrible aggression that occurred during those tragic 78 days in 1999. The suffering of innocent people, so many lives lost and destroyed, from the terror that was imposed upon all our citizens, keeps wounds hurting and the memory of this tragedy fresh.
This was an unprecedented event of total aggression in Europe since World War Two, that was not authorized by the United Nations. Once again, regrettably, it is confirmed that violence only produces more violence and pain. And innocent people are those who always suffer the most.
The memory of this aggression needs to remain alive and fresh; we must never forget all those that tragically fell as victims of this madness. They always must be in our minds, our hearts, and our prayers. We owe it to them, but also us, so that tragedy like this can never happen again”, said HRH Crown Prince Alexander in his message."

Princess Adelheid of Liechtenstein and the Hereditary Princess of Leiningen.
The PNP newspaper, which reported on the wedding also wrote that members of the British nobility attended the wedding. One can presume that these guests included two of the groom's half-sisters, the Duchess of Roxeburghe and Alice Fermor-Hesketh.
The wedding reception was held at Schloss Moos.
The couple's civil marriage took place on March 17 at the town hall in Moos. The mayor, Alexander Sacher, officiated at this wedding.

Prince Henry heading home
March 17, 1902
Prince Henry of Prussia and his entourage arrived in Cherbourg, France, at 6:30 p.m. from Plymouth, England, reports the Washington Post.
The prince was seen on the Deutschland's bridge when it entered Plymouth Harbor. He "waved a cheerful greeting" to the German naval attache, Capt. Koeper and other friends went out to "the steamship on the company's tender."
The voyage was "pleasant and uneventful," although Prince Henry was "tired out" during the first few days of the trip across the Atlantic. He spent little time with other passengers," but during the latter part of the journey, the prince appeared often on the promenade deck and he was seen often in pleasant communication with other passengers.
After the ship docked in Cherbourg, the German consul delivered to Prince Henry "a number of telegrams and letters, including a message of welcome." from the prince's older brother, Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The Kaiser has made arrangements for a reception at Cuxhaven when Prince Henry arrives. He said he was "greatly pleased" with the messages from the Emperor as it shows an "expression of his majesty's complete satisfaction" of Henry's visit to the United States.
Prince Henry told reporters that when he "finally boarded the Deutschland in New York," he went to his cabinet and "slept almost continuously for forty-eight hours." He did, however, appear for his meals," and take short walks on the bridge.
He said he had never "worked so hard in his life" when he was in the United States. He noted that he had to change his uniform several times a day, or "faced a succession of situations requiring such alertness and a certain initiative on his part."
When asked what impressed him the most, Prince Henry responded that the "great, orderly and cheerful crowds had been the most continuous impression."
Prince Henry will also be reunited with his wife, Princess Irene, and their three sons, Prince Waldemar, who turns 13 on March 20, Prince Sigismund5, and 2-year-old Prince Henry.
The family live in Hemmelmark, near Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein.

Will Alice become a German Empress?
March 14, 1902
Princess Alice of Albany is en route to Potsdam, according to a New York Times report.
If the latest rumors are to be believed, the 19-year-old princess, a niece of King Edward VII, is en route to Potsdam for her betrothal to Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, who is the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Should these rumors prove true, Alice would become the Crown Princess of Germany and Prussia and the future German Empress and Queen of Prussia.
Crown Prince Wilhelm will celebrate his 20th birthday on May 6.
Princess Alice is the elder of two children of the late Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, and Princess Helen of Waldeck und Pyrmont. Her younger brother, Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany, is also the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. As he is a minor, Car Eduard, as he is known in Germany, reigns under a regency headed by the Hereditary Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, who is married to Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh, third daughter of the late Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who died in 1900, a year after his only son, Hereditary Prince Alfred. In a family agreement, he was succeeded by his young nephew, Prince Charles Edward, who with his mother, the Duchess of Albany, moved to Germany, where he could be raised as a German sovereign.
Princess Alice, Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Hereditary Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg are first cousins, all grandchildren of Queen Victoria.
