Queen Letizia of Spain and the Prince of Wales carried out a joint engagement today in Bishop Auckland where they opened the Spanish Gallery at Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland. The gallery has housed e Francisco de Zurbarán's paintings, Jacob and his twelve sons, for more than 250 years. The castle is the residence of the Bishop of Durham.
The paintings had been on view in Long Dining Room and only accessible to the Bishop and his guests.
The Church of England wanted to sell the paintings. In 2012, Jonathan Ruffer, a "philanthropic financier," purchased the paintings and the castle.
The collection is open to the public.
