In 1906, the first Duke of Fife presented 12 acres of his Mar estate to the Royal Highland Society. This gift led to the creation of the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park.

The couple had two daughters, Alexandra (Princess Arthur of Connaught) and Maud (Countess of Southesk).

The Fife dukedom included a special remainder that allowed for the succession of the 1st duke's two daughters and their male heirs. Alexandra succeeded her father in 1912. The following year, she married her mother's first cousin, HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught. Their only son, Alistair, 2nd Duke of Connaught, died in 1943. When Alexandra died in 1959, the dukedom passed to her nephew, James, the only child of her younger sister, Maud.
