Queen Elizabeth II today "took the oath of accession to the British throne," reports the New York Times. She was also proclaimed as head of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
The young queen stood before nearly "200 of the Lords temporal and spiritual" and she asked for God's help in the discharge of the "heavy task that has ben laid upon me so early in life.
"I shall alwayswork, as my father did throughout his reign, to uphold the consitutional government and to advance the happiness and prosperity of all my peoples, spread as they are all the world over."
After the ceremony, which took place at St. James's Palace, the Queen and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh left by car to join her "sorrowing mother and sister" at Sandringham.
