King of Württemberg is dead

King Karl I of Württemberg died this morning at 7: 00 a.m.  He had been ill for some time.  Yesterday, his condition because "so critical that the last rites of the church were administered him."  During the night, his condition "became worse," and his doctors stated that they did not expect him to survive the night.

The King was born on March 6, 1829.  He succeeded to the throne on the death of his father, Wilhelm I, on June 25, 1864.   He married Grand Duchess Olga Nicolaievna of Russia, daughter of Emperor Nicholas on July 13, 1846, at St. Petersburg.    

The couple had no children, and the throne passes Duke Wilhelm, the eldest son of Karl's first cousin, Prince Friedrich Karl, and his wife, Princess Katherine of Württemberg,  the late King's sister.  

Thus, the new king, who has been proclaimed as Wilhelm II, is also the late king's nephew.

Wilhelm II is married to Princess Marie of Waldeck und Pyrmont.  They have one daughter, Duchess Pauline.
