Boris in Italy to meet with Giovanna and family

October 12, 1930

King Boris III of Bulgaria arrived tonight at the Royal palace in San Rossore and was greeted by his fiancee, Princess Giovanna of Italy, the Italian royal family, and court officials, according to the Associated Press.

The King traveled by train to Trieste and arrived there early in the morning.  He reached Pisa at 8 p.m. and was driven immediately to San Rosssore.  Despite the bad weather, crowds gathered to give the king "a rousing ovation" as he got into his car.

During his visit to his fiancee, King Boris will stay at the Gombo, a small palace, about a half a mile from the Cascine Vechhie, the royal family's villa.

Tomorrow, Boris will be able to talk with his future father-in-law, King Victor Emanuele, about the marriage plans.  The present plan is for Boris to visit briefly with Giovanna and her family, and then return to Bulgaria.

The venue for the marriage is still "veiled in secrecy."  San Rossore, Assisi, and Pisa are "all contending for the honor."

It is also understood that the Vatican is to make an announcement tomorrow regarding the marriage between Boris, who is Orthodox, and  Princess Giovanna.

According to a Vatican informant, who spoke to an AP reporter, the Vatican has not forgotten that Boris is the son of a Roman Catholic father and mother, "and was forced in infancy to adopt the Orthodox faith." for which Boris' father, Ferdinand, is "known to have apologized to the boy."

Roman Catholic "ecclesiastical visitors in Bulgaria" state that there is "no record in recent years of King Boris having publicly received the sacrament in the Orthodox Church within his kingdom."
