Day 1-2 - London A ducky day!

I am finally getting back to catching up.  Thankfully,  I had a mild case, but the numbers are going up again, so please be vigilant.

My trip began on May 30th with a night flight to London.  As you can see I had help packing the suitcase.   The British Airways left about 40 minutes late as several drunk passengers were not permitted to board the flight.  The delay was primarily due to removing their bags from the flight.    I had an entire row to myself.  I opened all four blankets and got as comfortable as I could.  Tylenol PM helped and I slept for nearly the whole flight, sleeping through dinner (after midnight) and waking up in time for breakfast. Yes,  I would like a cup of coffee.

It did not take long to get through passport control, but for most people, passports are no longer stamped.  As this was my 50th visit, I wanted my passport stamped.  That would be a no.  My suitcase arrived quickly, and I headed out to the main area of the airport.   I stopped at Costa Coffee for a vanilla latte -- and oh, a Jubilee muffin.

Jam inside.  Yummy

In February I purchased a 90-day advance ticket for the Heathrow Express to Paddington, which cost £11.00 roundtrip.  It is a 15-minute ride to Paddington Station, from where I would catch a cab to take me to my Air BnB on Coppermill Lane in Walthamstow, east London.  The house is across the street from the Walthamstow Wetlands, which surround reservoirs that provide water to London.   The three houses across from the wetlands were once owned by Thames Water.  The house I stayed in was once the home of the Chief Engineer.   The filtration center was next door.  One morning two swans flew by my bathroom window.

The reservoir across the street

the garden and the filtration system for Thames Water

This was a fabulous Air BnB, with great and wonderful hosts and an adorable dog.  But there would be a slight mishap before I got the cab.

When I got on the train, I put the carry bag and the wheels that I use when the big case was handed over to the airline, on top of the suitcase.  A nice man helped me get the bags off the train, but ... the wheels slipped off and fell to the track.

I was mortified, to say the least, but a Paddington Station official got a picker and rescued my wheels.

A lovely woman who works in that part of the station unlocked the luggage carrier so I could put my stuff on it to go upstairs to get a cab.   My adventure had begun.

It took nearly an hour to get to Walthamstow.   I selected this area because of the wetlands and a chance to see London's wildlife.   Walthamstow is on the Victoria Line (zone 3), about 20 minutes from Central London.  There are also several Overground stops, including St. James's, that end at Liverpool Street.

The walk to Blackhorse Lane took about 12 minutes.

Once settled into my room, I changed my clothes and shoes, accepted a cup of tea, and then headed into Green Park as I was meeting up with an American friend, Mark, who was heading home to the USA, the following day.

It was crazy at Green Park as the world's media were set up there.  The exit to Canada Gate was closed and there was also no access to Buckingham Palace due to the construction and rehearsals for the concert on Saturday night.

I met up with Mark and walked toward the Mall and get across to St. James's Park.  Huge crowds, but no way to get to the front of the Palace.

Our first choice for dinner did not have any seats so they recommended the Shakespeare Pub on Buckingham Palace Road, a few minutes away.  So that's where we had dinner.  A good time to catch up as we had not seen each other since before the pandemic.    Mark was heading back to his hotel to check out and move to a hotel near Heathrow.   We said goodbye at the Holborn stop.  I told Mark to text me when he got to his new hotel.

Thanks, to the good sleep I had on the plane,  I did not suffer jet lag. I headed back to Walthamstow, and stopped in at the Coppermill Lane pub for a beer,

Many homes were decorated for the Jubilee - and bunting everywhere

I headed back to the house but captured this sunset.

Day 2.   I had bought cereal, milk, and fruit the day before as I had my own shelf in the fridge and in a cupboard.  I also had a coffee machine in my room.   It was a lovely day.  (The only rain I had was in the evening of my first night).   I grabbed my camera to visit the wetlands, a good walk.

I was quite surprised to see Canada geese.  Just as nasty as they are in North America

A part of the London skyline from my bedroom window - you can see the Shard and the Gherkin

a magpie

Before heading back to the house I stopped at the  Larder Cafe at the Engine House where  I succumbed to a Jubilee creation.

Back at the house, I switched lenses (I use a 150-600mm for wildlife) and headed to Blackhorse Lane and into Central London as I wanted to go to St Paul's  (the Actors Church) in Covent Garden as I wanted to see the plaque honoring Dame Diana Rigg.

In the afternoon, I was meeting a Canadian Twitter friend,  Ed, for tea at the Rosebery at the  Mandarin Oriental hotel in Knightsbridge.  We did the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Tea.  I did not need to have dinner!

People already camping out in the Mall.

champagne

this is to hang the scones

After tea, headed back to Green Park to stake out for the Trooping .. and I run into Joe Little, editor of Majesty magazine, and got to see Prince William drive from the Palace to Clarence House ...

An early night, because I am getting up at 4:45 a.m. to meet Ed on the Mall to get a good place for the Trooping the Colour.

The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations are about to begin!!!!

Lady Elizabeth Shakerley's memorial service

Embed from Getty Images

A memorial service was held today at Westminster Abbey for the late Lady Elizabeth Shakerley, the founder of Party Planners.

The Hon. Elizabeth Georgiana Anson was born on June 7, 1941, at Windsor Castle to Thomas, Viscount Anson (1913-1958) and Anne Bowes-Lyon (1917-1980), a niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.   She had one older brother, Patrick, the 5th Earl of Lichfield (and noted society photographer).

One of Elizabeth's godparents was King George VI.  Lord and Lady Anson divorced in 1948.   Two years later, Anne married Prince Georg of Denmark, the eldest son of Prince Axel of Denmark and Princess Margaretha of Sweden.

Lord Anson died in 1958, leaving his son as heir to the Lichfield earldom.  Patrick succeeded his grandfather in 1960.  A year later, Queen Elizabeth issued a Royal Warrant that gave Elizabeth the title, rank, and precedence as the daughter of an Earl, thus becoming the Lady Elizabeth Anson.

In 1960,  she founded Party Planners, which would soon become the go-to planning business for royals and members of society.   As the stepdaughter of Prince George, she was often invited to European royal events, which gave her more contacts for her growing business.  In 1966, she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of the future Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Claus von Amsberg.

Lady Elizabeth married Sir Geoffrey Shakerley, Bt., in 1972, as his second wife.  The wedding took place at Westminster Abbey. Lady Elizabeth's attendants included Princess Anne and Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones. The couple had one daughter Fiona, a goddaughter of Queen Beatrix,  in August 1973.    The Shakerleys separated in 1986 and were finally divorced in 2009.   Sir Geoffrey died in 2012.

Lady Elizabeth died on November 1, 2020.

The Countess of Wessex represented the Queen at the memorial service.  The late Lady Elizabeth was a first cousin once removed of Queen Elizabeth.

A little delay

@Marlene Koenig

I tested positive for Covid this morning.  Mild case.  Achiness.   A sore throat that is going away.  Congestion and exhaustion.  Low-grade fever ...  Most likely caught  last Wednesday - airport or airplane ...

I have to quarantine for 5 days.  YUCK.   The cats do not cook.  But they are good cuddle kitties.

Thankful and grateful to science as I am fully vaccinated and boosted!

Archduke Karl of Austria has married for the second time

Embed from Getty Images

Archduke Karl of Austria, the de jure Emperor, confirmed to the Austrian newspaper, Kronen Zeitung, that he has married Christian Nicolau de Almeida Reid, his partner for the last few years.

He said the wedding took place in the spring in Portugal.  "I've always tried to keep my private life private, which is why we only married in the presence of our closest circle.  She's a wonderful woman. Now she is my wonderful wife."

It is believed that Archduke Karl, 61, and Christian Reid, were married in a civil ceremony.

https://royalmusingsblogspotcom.blogspot.com/2020/11/karl-of-austrias-not-so-secret-divorce.html

This is the second marriage for Karl, the eldest son of the late Archduke Otto of Austria.   His first marriage to Baroness Francesca von Thyssen-Bornemisza took place in Mariazell in January 1993.  They had three children, Archduchess Eleonore (1994),  Archduke Ferdinand Zvonimir (1997), and Archduchess Gloria (1999), before separating in 2003.   Karl and Francesca were divorced in 2019

In a November 2020 interview with the Austrian media,  Karl said: "Christian is a cultivated and sensitive woman with elegant decency. She is a loving advisor, sometimes also a valuable critic, and is always there for me, a partner in the best sense of the word. In short, she is an incredible enrichment to my life and I am happy to have her by my side."

Christian is the youngest of four daughters of Robin Reid and Elsa Andresen Nicolau de Almeida.

Prince and Princess Michael to retire from royal life

Embed from Getty Images

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent are expected to announce their retirement from royal life, according to an inclusive report by the Daily Telegraph's Camilla Tominey.

The announcement is expected to be made within a few weeks, perhaps in connection with Michael's 80th birthday on July 4.

The Prince is the youngest child of the late Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.  He has two older siblings,  Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy.

Tominey gets it wrong when she writes that Michael has a lineage to Nicholas II.  That would be a no, Camilla  Michael, a fluent Russian speaker, has Romanov ancestry through his mother, Princess Marina, whose mother was Grand Duchess Helen Vladimirovna of Russia.  Grand Duchess Helen was a first cousin of Tsar Nicholas II, who has no living descendants. He and his wife and their five children were murdered by the Bolsheviks in July 1918.

Michael was never expected to undertake official duties as he was the younger son of the late Duke of Kent.  He was in the same position as Prince Richard of Gloucester,  a trained architect, who had to give up his career when his older brother, Prince William, was killed in a plane crash in August 1972.   The death of William, and two years later, the death of the Duke of Gloucester, meant that Richard and his wife, Birgitte, would become working royals.

Although the prince and his wife have never been "working royals",  they have occasionally represented Queen Elizabeth II.  Michael has represented the Queen at state funerals in India, Cyprus, and Swaziland.  He and his wife were the Queen's official representatives at Belize's independence celebrations in September 1981 and at the coronation of King Mswati III of Swaziland in 1986

More recently, Prince Michael represented the Queen at The 150th Anniversary of the Crimean War in the Ukraine celebration in September 2004.

Prince Michael married Silesian Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz in June 1978.  They have two children,  Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Kingston.

It is understood that Prince Michael and his wife have been battling health issues.  Princess Michael is still recovering from Long Covid.

Princess Mafalda weds

Embed from Getty Images

Princess Mafalda of Bulgaria and Marc Abousleiman were married on May 29.  The private civil ceremony took place at the home of Mafalda's mother, Princess Rosario in Campos on Mallorca.  The night before the wedding, the bride's father, Prince Kyril hosted a "grand party" at his home in Porreres.   Infanta Cristina of Spain and Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway were said to be among the guests.

Upon their arrival at Princess Rosario's home, wedding guests were required to put their cell phones in provided space so no one would be able to snap a photo of the bride and groom.  The wedding planner and the hired wedding staff were required to sign a confidentiality agreement, according to several Spanish news sources.

Marc Abousleiman arrived at Princess Rosario's home at 5:21 p.m.  Before he used a secret code to open the gates, he responded to questions from four photographers.  "Everything is well, thank you very much."

Other guests who were spotted arriving at the wedding were the bride's grandfather, King Simeon of Bulgaria, and  Prince Kubrat and Princess Carla of Bulgaria

The bride made her appearance at 7:16 p.m. and was said to be "radiant and happy."

In a pre-wedding interview with Point de Vue, the Princess said that wedding plans were going "very well".

She and Marc wanted an intimate wedding, not one with "great pomp, just music and lots of love."  She added that her family is "very happy and eager"  to welcome Marc into the family.

I can only speculate that Mafalda's gown was designed by Valentino as her mother has been one of the designer's muses.
