The funeral of Lady Pamela Hicks took place at Bartholomew Church in Brightwell Baldwin, Oxfordshire, on June 13th.

From the Court Circular:

"The King and Queen were represented by the Duke of Abercorn KG at the Funeral of the Lady Pamela Hicks (former Lady in Waiting to The late Queen) which was held at St. Bartholomew's Church, Brightwell Baldwin, Oxfordshire, this afternoon.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and The Duke of Kent, were represented by the Lady Helen Taylor.

The Princess Royal was represented by the Lady Susan Hussey.

Princess Alexandra, the Hon. Lady Ogilvy was represented by Ms. Lynda Atkins."

The Duke of Abercorn, who will celebrate his 92nd birthday on July 4, served as Lord Steward of the Household to Queen Elizabeth II from 2001 to 2009. He was Chancellor of the Order of the Garter until his retirement in 2024.   The Duke, a first cousin of the late 8th Earl Spencer. was married to Alexandra "Sacha" Phillips (1946-2018).   Sacha was the eldest child of Georgina Wernher and Harold "Bunny" Phillips, who, in the 1930s, had an affair with Lady Pamela's mother, Edwina.  It was Edwina who encouraged Bunny to marry Gina Wernher.  Gina's parents were Sir Harold, Bt, and Lady Zia Wernher, whose sister Nada was married to Lady Pamela's uncle, George, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven.  Bunny's first cousin, Janet Bryce, was the second wife of George's son, David, 3rd Marquess of Milford Haven.

The Duke of Abercorn was the one who identified the remains of the late Lord Mountbatten after the latter's assassination.  The police had asked Lady Pamela to identify her father. According to India, her mother found the request "most haunting" and a "horrific idea."  As she was preparng to leave, a "close, dear friend," the Duke of Abercorn arrived at Classiebawn.

Lady Pamela turned to the duke: "James, I can't do this. Will you identify him?"  In a very gentle tone, the duke agreed.   Lady Pamela was "forever indebted to him."

Although Edwina had encouraged Bunny's relationship with Gina, she "took the news very badly," according to Lady Pamela's book, Daughter of Empire.  Bunny asked Lady Pamela to be a bridesmaid, but Edwina told her daughter, "that I would be at school that day and it would not be possible."   The wedding date had not been announced.

The Duke and the late Duchess of Abercorn remained close friends of the Mountbattens and the British Royal Family.  Gina Wernher was one of the late Queen's lifelong friends.

The guests at the funeral included Lady Pamela's three children: Edwina, Ashley, and India, and their children, with the exception of Ashley's two young sons, Caspar and Horatio.  The Countess Mountbatten of Burma and her daughter, Lady Alexandra Hooper, also attended.  Lady Mountbatten is the daughter-in-law of Lady Pamela's late sister, Patricia, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma.
