HRH The Duchess of Gloucester celebrates her 80th birthday today. The Danish-born Birgitte van Deurs moved to England to study English and got a job as a secretary at the Danish Embassy. It was in London where she met HRH Prince Richard of Gloucester, the younger son of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The couple married in July 1972. Six weeks later, Richard's older brother, HRH Prince William of Gloucester, was killed in an aviation accident. Prince Richard, a trained architect, was now the heir to his father's dukedom. The Duke died in 1974. Richard and Birgitte were now TRH The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. They have three children, Alexander, Earl of Ulster, Lady Davina Windsor, and Lady Rose Gilman, and six grandchildren.
