HSH The Prince of Salm-Salm died on August 6, 2024, at 91.  He had been head of the Salm-Salm princely family since January 15, 1988, following his father's death, HSH Nikolaus Leopold Heinrich Alfred Emanuel Friedrich Antonius, 8th Prince of Salm-Salm.

Prince Carl-Philipp Joseph Petrus Coelestinus Balthasar of Salm-Salm was born on May 19, 1933, at Wasserburg Anholt, in Isselburg-Anholt, the third of seven children of Prince Nikolaus Leopold and his first wife,  Princess Maria Ida Leonhardine von Wrede.   He became the heir apparent after his older brother, Prince Alfred was killed in an air raid in March 1945.

In 1954, he graduated from  Aloisiuskolleg,  a Jesuit school in Bad Godesberg.

The prince studied business administration in Paris and Munich and earned a business administration degree, followed by a career in banking and finance.  In 1969, he took over the administration of the Salm-Salm family properties and businesses.  Several years ago, Prince Carl Philipp passed these duties to his eldest son, Prince Emanuel.

He called himself an "Anholt boy," as he had a "strong connection to his birthplace.  A devout Catholic, he attended Saturday evening mass at St. Pankratius Church.   In February 1961, Prince Carl-Philipp married Erika Carla Eleonore Helga Sophie Luise von Morgen (1935-2007).   The couple had four children:  Prince Emanuel Philipp Nikolaus Johann (1961), and Prince Philipp Petrus Andreas Antonius Jochim (1963). Princess Felicitas Marcellina Josepha Flaminia Maria (1965) and Prince Clemens Angelus Paul Ferdinand Moritz (1966).

Prince Carl Philipp and his wife were divorced in 1979. He married Elisabeth Fritsch in 1993.

The late prince is survived by his second wife, Elisabeth, and his four children, Emanuel, Philipp, Felicitas, and Clemens, and four grandchildren (Prince Willem Florentin Maria of Salm-Salm (son of Prince Philipp and his wife, Hermine de Cassan-Floyrac) and Emanuel, Alexander, and Flaminia von Grolman (the children of Princess Felicitas and her husband, Christopher von Grolman).

Prince Emanuel succeeds as the 10th Prince of Salm-Salm.  He has been married twice. His first marriage was in 1992 to Zita von Klot-Heydenfeldt. This marriage was dissolved by divorce in 2002 and later annulled.  Eight years later, in 2010, he married Anne Seyfang.  Both marriages are childless.

The heir presumptive is Prince Emanuel's brother, Prince Philipp.

Prince Clemens?
Or not a Prince?

Why is the heir the brother and not one of the sons?

Yes Clemens is a prince. The new heir is Emanuel's brother, Philipp because the new prince has no sons
