The new prince's first name honors Crown Prince Rupprecht Maria Luitpold Ferdinand of Bavaria (1869-1955), the eldest son of the Bavarian's last sovereign, King Ludwig III.

Ludwig III Rupprecht - Irmingard - Luitpold - Ludwig - Rupprecht.

Princess Irmingard married Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, son of Prince Franz,  Crown Prince Rupprecht's younger brother.

The current head of the Bavarian Royal House is Franz, Duke of Bavaria.  He is the eldest son of Albrecht, Duke of Bavaria (1905-1996), the eldest son of Crown Prince Rupprecht, and his first wife, Duchess Marie Gabrielle in Bavaria.

Albrecht married Countess Maria Draskovich von Trakostjan.  Duke Franz is their eldest son.  He is not married.  His heir is his younger brother,  Duke Max Emanuel in Bavaria, who is the father of five daughters.

Bavarian royal succession is governed by Salic law, which means females cannot succeed.  This also applies to the descendants of Bavarian princesses.

Prince Ludwig's father, Prince Luitpold is second in line, following Duke Max Emanuel.
