A new emperor for Austria?
It is "being hinted" in Europe that the young Archduke Karl may become the new emperor as early as next week, according to the Chicago Daily Tribune. He will celebrate his coming of age -- his eighteenth birthday
-- on August 17, and Emperor Franz Joseph will celebrate his 75th birthday the following day.
It is "thought possible" that the elderly emperor will "choose this opportunity" to abdicate in favor of his great nephew. It is expected that the Emperor's nephew, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, will also renounce his rights in favor of Archduke Karl.
Karl's father, Archduke Otto, is "barred by the condition of his health" from succeeding to the "responsibilities of the turbulent empire."
