August 4, 1905
The Infante Fernando Maria Antonio Alfonso Carlo Federico Ignacio Olegario, the second son of the late Princess of Asturias, died this morning at San Sebastian. He was two years old and succumbed to meningitis, according to the New York Times.
Fernando was second in line to the Spanish throne after his older brother, Infante Alfonso. Alfonso is the only male heir to the Spanish throne, but he has not been given the title of Prince of Asturias. His mother, Infanta Mercedes, eldest daughter of the late King Alfonso XII and Archduchess Maria Cristina of Austria, was heiress to the throne from her birth until her death last year following the birth of a daughter, Infanta Isabel Alfonsa.
Mercedes married Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies in February 1901. Infante Alfonso was born the following November, followed by Fernando in March 1903. The Princess of Asturias died last October 17, one day after giving birth to Infanta Isabel Alfonsa, who is third in line to the Spanish throne.
King Alfonso XIII is unmarried.
