A New Grand Duke Tomorrow

@Maison du Grand Duc

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg will abdicate his throne tomorrow in favor of his eldest son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume.

Henri, 70, will be the fourth Luxembourg monarch to abdicate in favor of the heir.  In January 1919, Grand Duchess Marie Adelaide abdicated, and her sister, Charlotte, succeeded her.   Grand Duchess Charlotte abdicated in favor of her eldest son, Jean, in 1964. Thirty-six years later, Jean stepped down, and his eldest son, Henri, became the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

 Guillaume, 43, will become the 10th sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He will be styled as Grand Duke Guillaume V.

The soon-to-be Grand Duke is married to Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy. The couple has two young sons, Charles and Francois.  Five-year-old Charles will become the youngest heir to a throne in the world.
