A royal baby on the way

The Duchess of Kent will not be "undertaking any further engagements for the next few months," according to an official announcement today.

According to the Associated Press, such announcements indicate that "a new  heir is expected in the royal family."

The Duke and Duchess of Kent have two children. Prince Edward, 6, and Princess Alexandra, 5.

The Duchess was born Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark,  one of three daughters of the late Prince Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Helen of Russia.   She married Prince George, Duke of Kent in Westminister Abbey in November 1934.

The Duke of Kent is the youngest brother of King George VI

 The new royal baby is believed to be due sometime in mid-summer.  The new prince or princess will be the eighth grandchild of Queen Mary.   A new prince will be 7th in line to the throne moving ahead of Princess Alexandra, but a princess will be 8th in line, following Alexandra.

The current line of succession:  Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, The Duke of Gloucester, Prince William of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, Prince Edward of Kent, Princess Alexandra of Kent.
