Archduchess will marry a man who earns $20 a year
April 4, 1920
Archduchess Marie Alice of Austria, youngest daughter of Archduke Friedrich, is engaged to be married, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. Her future husband is Baron Friedrich Waldbott von Bassenheim, "a scion of an old Prussian family."
The Archduchess is the eighth of nine children of Archduke Friedrich and Archduchess Isabella, who was born a Princess of Croy. She was born at Pressburg on January 15, 1893.
Baron Friedrich, 30, currently works for a commercial bank in Budapest, where he earns 5000 Kronen annually. At the current exchange rate, this salary is worth $20.00.
Archduke Friedrich was the "richest man in the former monarchy."
