Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme met with Prince Laurent today to read him the riot act, where he would "set out new rules" for Prince Laurent's conduct, and to reiterate that he would not be allowed to repeat "such unacceptable activities."
Prince Laurent, 12th in line to the throne, visited the Congo last month despite disapproval from the Belgian government. More recently, he met with a Libyan diplomat, a meeting that the Prime Minister called "very risky and unwise."
Next week, Leterme will report back to a parliamentary committee and discuss with them the meeting with Prince Laurent.
The new rules have not been made public. A friend of Prince Laurent told Belgian television that Laurent felt bad about the commotion. "On the one hand, he wants to be useful. On the other hand, the rules are not clear on what he can and cannot do," the friend said.
