Prince Vittorio Emanuele's funeral

 The funeral of the late Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Italy, the only son of King Umberto II, was held today in the Dome of Turin.

Members of the Italian royal family who were present for the funeral include the Princess of Naples (widow), The Prince and Princess of Piedmont and their two daughters, Princess Vittoria and Princess Luisa, Princess Maria Pia of Bourbon-Parma (the late prince's elder sister) and two of her sons only daughter, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Prince Serge with his wife. Princess Eleonora of Yugoslavia and  Princess Hélène of Yugoslavia and her husband, Stanislas Fougeron, Marie Elisabeth  Janssens (daughter of Princess Maria Gabriella of Savoy),  Azaea Reyna-Corvalán y de Saboya (daughter of Princess Maria Beatrice of Savoy, and the Duke and Duchess of Aosta. 

As a sign of reconciliation between the two branches of the Savoy family, the royal flag was placed on Vittorio Emanuele's coffin by four Knights of the Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation: Prince Aimone, Duke of Aosta,  Count Agostino Guarienti of Brenzone, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia and  Prince Serge of Yugoslavia.

 The late prince's two younger sisters, Princesses Maria Gabriella and Maria Beatrice were unable to travel due to health reasons.  Princess Maria Gabriella is in a Swiss hospital and Maria Gabriella lives in Mexico.

Members of other royal families who were also present included:  Queen Sofia of Spain, the Prince of Monaco, King Fouad II of Egypt,   Prince Leka of Albania, Archduke Martin of Austria, Prince Jean of Luxembourg,  Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark, Princess Victoria Romanovna Romanoff, the Duke and Duchess of Chartres, Prince Charles of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and his daughter, Princess Maria Carolina, Prince Boris of  Bulgaria, Prince Charles and Princess Naomi of Orléans, and the Prince of Windisch-Graetz.

After the funeral,  Prince Vittorio Emanuele's remains were cremated.  His ashes will be interred in the Basilica of Superga in Turin.

"For a long time, he wanted to be buried in Superga. My father was born in Naples and will be buried in Turin: this is the unity of Italy, this is our Italy, this is the house of Savoy," Prince Emanuele Filiberto told journalists after the funeral service.
