Alfonso & Patricia: engagement announcement coming

The engagement of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Princess Patricia of Connaught, youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, "appears to be accepted as fact," even though no official announcement has been made, reports the Chicago Daily Tribune.
The religious differences have been "overcome," and it has been agreed that sons will be raised Roman Catholic, and daughters will be brought up as members of the Church of England.
Princess Patricia is described as "tall and slight with a fresh English complexion and light brown hair. She and her older sister, Princess Margaret, the fiancée of Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, are said to be "good riders and fond of outdoor sports."

Kardam of Bulgaria: burial at San Isidro
Family and friends came to the funeral home at San Isidro earlier today to say goodbye to Prince Kardam of Bulgaria, eldest son of King Simeon, who died yesterday at the age 52.
Mourners included Princess Cristina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and her husband, Pedro Lopez-Quesada, Princess Beatrice of Orleans and Grand Duchess Maria of Russia.
Nearly the entire Bulgarian royal family was present for the obsequies. Kardam's widow, Princess Miriam and her two sons, Prince Boris and Prince Beltran and King Simeon and Queen Margarita, were joined by Prince Kyrill and his two daughters, Princesses Mafalda and Olimpia, Prince Kubrat and Princess Carla with their three sons, Mirko, Lukas and Tirso, Prince Konstantin and Princess Maria, and Princess Kalina, who was accompanied by her husband, Kitin Munoz and their son, Simeon.
Princess Kalina was unable to arrive in time to be with her family when Kardam died.
A private Orthodox funeral took place at the cemetery at San Isidro.

Prince Kardam: funeral
The funeral of Prince Kardam of Bulgaria, Prince of Tirnovo, will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) and will be followed by internment at San Isidro.
Tonight, Queen Sofia and Infanta Elena came to the chapel to pay their respects to Princess Miriam, Princes Boris and Beltran and King Simeon and Queen Margarita.
Simoneta Gomez-Acebo, daughter of Infanta Pilar, and Marita Zurita, daughter of Infanta Margarita, were also seen arriving at the chapel.

HRH Prince Kardam of Bulgaria,. Prince of Tirnovo, died at 11:30 a.m., in Sanchinarro Hospital in Madrid. He was 52 years old.
Prince Kardam was the eldest child and heir apparent of King Simeon II of Bulgaria and Queen Margarita. He was born at Madrid on December 2, 1962.
He attend the French Lyceum school in Madrid. He studied philosophy and economics at Clark University, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and received a master's degree in Agricultural economics from Penn State. He worked as an agricultural economist in Virginia and Argentina before he returned to Madrid.
Kardam married Doña Miriam de Ungria y Lopez, a gemologist, in an Orthodox ceremony on July 11, 1996,
On August 15, 2008, Prince Kardam and Princess Miriam were involved in a car accident in El Molar, near Madrid. Their car crashed into a tree, then turned over. They were taken to two separate hospitals, as Kardam's injuries were life-threatening. (Princess Miriam suffered broken ribs, an broken elbow and a collapsed lung.)
Prince Kardam suffered injuries to his hands, but it was the severe brain and skull traumas that led to the doctors placing the prince in an artificial coma, after he underwent surgery.
Early reports stated he was in critical but stable condition. By January 2009, Kardam went home, and was slowly recovering. He was able to stand (his hands were paralyzed), and he was able to communicate with his family. In January 2010, he suffered a major setback, and fell into a coma. He was brought back to the hospital, where he remained, never recovering from the coma.
The cause of death was a lung infection.
Prince Kardam is survived by his wife, Miriam and their two sons, Prince Boris, 17, and Prince Beltran, 16; his parents, King Simeon and Queen Margarita; three brothers and a sister, Princes Kyril, Kubrat & Konstantin-Assen and Princess Kalina, and their families.
Princess Miriam, King Simeon, Queen Margarita, and Princes Kyril, Kubrat and Konstantin were at Kardam's bedside when he died.
Kardam was raised in the Orthodox faith, and his two sons were baptized in the Orthodox church. Princess Miriam, who was baptized as a Roman Catholic, converted to Orthodoxy several years ago.

Lord Athlone named Governor General of Canada

The Earl of Athlone, uncle of King George VI, was appointed as Governor General of Canada, The announcement was made tonight, reports the New York Times. Lord Athlone succeeds Lord Tweedsmuir, who died in Montreal on February 11.
Lord Athlone has had a "distinguished record as a soldier and statesman," and recently cooperated with the Oxford Group's "moral rearmament campaign." He was first named as Governor General of Canada in May 1914, when he was Prince Alexander of Teck. He was to succeed his wife's uncle, the Duke of Connaught.
When the World War broke out, the Duke of Connaught "was persuaded to extend his term of office." That extension ended in 1916. As Prince Alexander was on active service in France, "where he distinguished himself," his appointment as Governor General was canceled.
This will be his "third experience" as a governor General. On October 27, 1923, he was appointed as Governor General of South Africa, succeeded Prince Arthur of Connaught, only son of the Duke of Connaught. He was "so successful" that his term of office was extended, and he remained for seven years.
He is not expected to travel to Canada until June. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, will accompany her husband.
On April 1, Princess Alice and Lord Athlone stayed at Buckingham Palace and dined with King George and Queen Elizabeth.
Vincent Massey, Canada's High Commissioner in London, said "Canadians would be proud to welcome so distinguished a public servant." He also "paid tribute to Princess Alice's wide human interests."
Lord Athlone is the younger brother of Queen Mary. He is married to Princess Alice of Albany, only daughter of the late Duke of Albany, and a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. They have one surviving child, Lady May Abel Smith.
Due to "war exigencies," the exact date of Lord Athlone's arrival will not be released in advance. He will be "sworn in", when he arrives in Ottawa, and not when he lands in Halifax or Quebec, which has been the custom during peace time.

The London newspaper also reports that Princess Patricia's uncle, King Edward VII, has already given his consent to the proposed marriage.

Queen Eleonore: Bulgaria must join war

Queen Eleonore of Bulgaria tells a reporter from the Chicago Daily Tribune that "With us we know that we must fight now or never. There is not likely to be a war for a long time when this one is over. But the question whether we have to decide is whether the territory we can hope to gain will be worth the cost in men and money."
The interview with Queen Eleonore, consort of King Ferdinand, took place at Samakov.
She said: "Then, again, the diplomatic questions are complicated. It is against Greece, Roumania, and Serbia we hold enmity for unjustly taking our territory after the war against Turkey which our armies had won for the alliance. How can we attack those three countries and stand on the side of allies?
"I have many friends in Petrograd and the whole country has a deep sense of its obligation to Russia, for what it has done for us in the past. How can we make it plain to Russia that if we join Austria against Serbia we do not joint it against Russia?
"On the other hand, Bulgarians have a deep sympathy for the methods and development of Germany, and therefore it would go much against our spirit to join Germany's enemies.
"True, our sense of obligation to Russia probably would overcome our sympathies for Teutonic methods, but against, both of these factors we must balance the probability of our own loss or gain."
The Queen was asked about the Austrian prisoners of war at Nish. "I wish we could help them," she said, "but the Red Cross supplies are almost impossible to get into Bulgaria. In the even of war we would be in short of supplies and it is necessary for me to do all I can do now to increase the stock.
"I used every influence I could to obtain supplies from Austria, the usual source, but except, for a few small packages bought as if for my own personal use I have been able to get nothing."

Prince Georg Friedrich, the only son of the late Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia and Countess Donata zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, married Princess Sophie of Isenburg at Potsdam in August, 2011.
They have twin sons Hereditary Prince Carl Friedrich and Prince Louis Ferdinand, born on January 20, 2013.
In 1994, Prince Georg Friedrich succeeded his grandfather, Prince Louis Ferdinand.

Italian-Belgian nuptials expected

The Duke of Brabant, heir to the Belgian throne, and his sister, Princess Marie José arrived today at the Villa Margherita at Bordighera, as the guests of Queen Elena of Italy and Queen Mother, reports the New York Times.
Queen Elena's three daughters, Mafalda, Giovanna and Maria, are also at the Villa, and Crown Prince Umberto is expected to arrive tomorrow.
It is understood that the "joint betrothal" of the Duke of Brabant and Princess Mafalda and Crown Prince Umberto and Princess Marie José will be announced after the Belgian general election next week. King Albert will remain at Brussels until after the election, and then he will be able to travel to Bordighera.
