On May 9, 2018, Hereditary Duke Friederich of Württemberg was killed in an automobile accident, leaving behind his wife, Duchess Marie, and their three grown children, Duke Wilhelm, Duchess Marie-Amélie, and Duchess Sophie-Dorothee.
Fast-forward seven years. According to the German newspaper Bild, Duchess Marie has found love again. The story was first reported on April 26, 2025. The Duchess, 51, has "every reason to smile again after the tragic loss of her husband." She and Count Nikolaus von Matuschka, 61, have been a couple for some time.
Count Nikolaus is a widower. His wife, Marie-Louise von Voss, succumbed to cancer in 2022 at the age of 58. He is the former manager and labor director of Hochtief AG, headquartered in Essen, Germany.
Duchess Marie and Count Nikolaus were arm in arm when they attended the wedding of Nikolaus's son Count Vincent to Countess Hemma von Khevenhüller-Metsch in the fall of 2023. They were also guests at the wedding of Countess Helene von Waldburg-Zeil and Count Ludwig von Neipperg in November 2024. They chose to enter and leave the church, St. Maria, separately.
Nikolaus's son Count Caspar is married to Countess Leonie von Waldburg-Zeil-Hohenems. Another son, Count Ludwig, is engaged to marry Countess Marie Henckel von Donnersmarck.
Nikolaus and Marie continue to maintain separate homes. He lives in Jüchen and she now lives in a house by Lake Tegernsee, having moved out of her marital home, Schloss Friedrichshafen.
The couple is said to be "very happy together, but celebrate their relationship discreetly."
