This morning, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince George, the fourth son, has been created Duke of Kent, Earl of St. Andrews, and Baron Downpatrick. According to the New York Times, many believed that George would be created Duke of Edinburgh, but the Kent dukedom was "chosen instead because of Princess Marina's descent from Queen Victoria, and from the last holder of the title."
Queen Victoria's father was the last Duke of Kent.
The assassination of King Alexander I is not expected to affect the wedding plans of the new Duke and Princess Marina, who is the younger sister of Princess Olga, the wife of Prince Paul, named as one of three regents for the young King Peter.
It was in Yugoslavia in August that Prince George and Princess Marina became engaged.
[A little late now to tell the New York Times, but Marina was not a descendant of Queen Victoria or Victoria's father.]
