October 9, 1934.
King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, 46, and French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou were assassinated today in Marseilles. The killings took place only five minutes after King Alexander had arrived in Marseilles for the start of an official visit to France.
The assassin, with his gun, also wounded the French general who was in the car with the King and Barthou. Twelve other people were also injured in the hail of bullets. The assassin, believed to be a 35-year-old Croat, was killed by police.
The new king is Alexander's eldest son, Peter, 11, who is at boarding school in England. Queen Marie did not accompany her husband on this visit, and is now en route by special train to Marseilles.
