Queen Anne of Romania

all three photos: Marlene A. Eilers Koenig Collection
Today is the 65th wedding anniversary of King Michael and Queen Anne of Romania.  They are celebrating the event privately.

In May, Queen Anne, 89, was admitted to a Swiss hospital.  Erroneous reports stated that the Queen suffered from lung cancer.  Queen Anne does not have lung cancer.

She suffered a hairline fracture of her ankle following a sprain.  She was in the hospital for about a week, and is now back at her Swiss home.

Modern Montenegro

I will be writing more about my visit to Montenegro, but just wanted to share a few of the modern postcards (reprints) that I found for sale in the little church near the palace in Cetinje. I also found royal fridge magnets.

Around his neck The King wore the Order of the Sword, the Swedish military order.
The King also wore two grand stars: the Swedish Order of the Seraphim's grand star at the top and the grand star of the Order of Vasa underneath. On his chest (from inside outwards), The King wore decorations in miniature: King Gustav V's Jubilee Order II, King Gustav VI Adolf's Commemorative Medal, the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of the Sword, the Order of the Polar Star and the Order of Vasa.

The Crown Princess wore Princess Lilian's Tiara and corsage, with the Order of the Seraphim on a ribbon with grand star. Princess Lilian's Tiara was made by the company Boucheron in Paris, and was originally a necklace. It was a gift from Queen Sofia (1836-1913) to Princess Lilian's mother-in-law, Crown Princess Margareta, on her wedding day in 1905.

The table setting

The table of honour is decorated with étagères and candelabras, burnished bronzes dating from the 19th century, and with pink and white early summer flowers such as peonies, sweet peas, garden roses, lady's mantle and columbines.

The flowers

A large garland of birch leaves is suspended from the ceiling, with hanging arcs of pink flowers. The flowers at the table of honour are arranged in burnished bronzes from the Royal Collections. Behind the bride and groom is a backdrop of pale pink peonies, hydrangeas and cow parsley.

Glassware

The glassware was given to The King and Queen on the occasion of their wedding in 1976 by the Riksdag and the Government. In other words, this was the Swedish people's wedding gift to the couple.

Silver chargers

The chargers used at the top table were commissioned by King Karl XIV Johan, while the others date back to the late 18th century and were probably commissioned by King Adolf Fredrik and Queen Lovisa Ulrika and by King Gustav III.

The first course

The plates feature the monogram of King Gustaf V and the Swedish emblem of three crowns. They were made by Rörstrand in 1910.
The cutlery was commissioned by Queen Désirée, the first Bernadotte queen. They feature the monogram EBD (Eugenia Bernhardina Desideria), and are gold-plated. They were made in Stockholm around 1830-40.

The fish course

The Rosenthal Monbijou plates feature a green floral motif. Late 20th century.
The cutlery is the well-known Swedish design Olga. The forks are Swedish, and were made in the mid-1800s, while the knives in the same design were commissioned by King Gustaf VI Adolf in the 1950s.

The meat course

The plates are decorated with the wording “Drottningholms slott" (“Drottningholm Palace") and a royal crown, and were made by Rörstrand in 1910.
The cutlery was commissioned by Queen Josefina, and the design is called Prince Albert.

Dessert

The dishes feature a motif of butterflies and flowers, and are marked KPM (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin), 19th century.

The table linen

The table linen consists of Klässbols tablecloths and napkins that are more than a hundred years old, woven from damask. Approximately 640 m² of linen has been used for the wedding banquet at Drottningholm. The napkins were woven in 1891, in Lille in France, by the Lemaitre Demestre & Fils textile factory, which was situated on the Place de la Gare at 19 Rue de Baisses. The pattern features the coat of arms of the Swedish-Norwegian union, woven into the middle of the napkin.
All 500 napkins are from the Union Linen. In 1891, there were 999 napkins. 919 of these are still used, thanks to the Linen Chamber's careful treatment. Damask is mangled according to old traditions. The process consists of 18 different stages, from stain removal and laundering to folding, mangling and rolling. The linen is stored in a cool storeroom for at least three months before being used again, so that the fibres can rest and return to their correct form.
The 45 Fru Embla tablecloths feature a simple pattern, providing an elegant background for the table settings. They were commissioned in 2013 from Klässbols. The tablecloths were commissioned for the new Sweden dinners, at which guests are served at round tables. The rest of the Linen Chamber's tablecloths are either too small or too large for the round tables used at these dinners. The fabric is linen.

Madeleine and Chris: gala dinner photo

The Royal Palace has released one photo of the Royal Family and the O'Neill family taken at the gala dinner tonight.  Princess Madeleine will marry British-American financier Chris O'Neill tomorrow afternoon.

Zita settles in Spain

June 7, 1923

The New York Times is reporting that former Austrian Empress Zita, and her children and her mother-in-law, Archduchess Maria Josefa, have "taken possession of the palace at Lequetio," which was formerly owned by Count Torregrosa.

The palace, in Bilbao, was given to the Empress "by public subscription."

Local authorities in the "little fishing village" organized a reception in honor of the former Imperial family's arrival.  The streets were festooned with garlands, and a "Te Deum was sung in the parish church."

Archduchess Maria Immaculata is not going to be a nun

June 7, 1913

Archduke Leopold Salvator of Austria is denying reports that his daughter, Archduchess Maria Immaculata is about to enter a convent, according to a direct wire to the Los Angeles Times.

The 20-year-old archduchess undertakes charity work, and prefers her "books to society, the lanes and open fields to the traveled roads, and the cottages of the peasantry to the palace of the nobles."

The rumors began when Austrian newspapers published a photo of the archduchess wearing "the garb of a Benedictine nun."  The photo, however, was taken some years ago by her father, when she attended a children's fancy dress party.

Archduchess Maria Immaculata is the second child of Archduke Leopold Savor and his wife, Infanta Blanca of Spain, daughter of the Carlist pretender the Duke of Madrid.  She was named for her paternal grandmother, Princess Maria Immaculata of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, who died in 1899.

Diamond Anniversary: the Mecklenburgs

 June 7, 1903

The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz will celebrate their Diamond Anniversary on June 28.   The Marquise de Fontenoy notes that this this celebration "cannot fail to arouse a good deal of sympathetic interest."

The Grand Duchess is a member of the British Royal Family.  She is the sister of the Duke of Cambridge and the aunt of the Princess of Wales, whose mother was the Grand Duchess' younger sister, Princess Mary Adelaide.

Princess Augusta of Cambridge married the then Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Streltiz, her first cousin, at Buckingham Palace on June 28, 1848.  The Archbishop of Canterbury officiated at the ceremony.

The Grand Duke is "quite blind."  He lost his sight forty-five years ago "through the carelessness of his only son," then a young child.  But the Hereditary Grand Duke's life has been "overshadowed by the sorrow" for the awful feeling that he was responsible for his father's blindness.

The Grand Duke is said to have "many American friends," as he spends "a prolonged stay" in Homburg each summer, where he can mix "freely in society."  He is usually accompanied by an aide de camp, and most people do not realize that the "aged sovereign is blind, as " courteously acknowledging the salutations of people whom he cannot possibly see."

The Grand Duke, described as "old and frail," recently issued a "pathetic proclamation" that owing to his poor health, he and his wife will be "compelled" to celebrate their diamond anniversary "quietly and in the utmost privacy."

Grand Duchess Augusta is in far better health.  She is said to be "cheery and [a] handsome old lady." She spends a good portion of each year in London, where she owns a house in Belgravia.

The couple have only one son, and several grandchildren.  One granddaughter, Duchess Jutta, is the wife of the Crown Prince of Montenegro. She converted to the Orthodox faith.   Her sister, Duchess Marie, is married to Count Georges de Jametel, the son of a very "wealthy French patent medicine manufacturer.  The de Jametel title was bestowed by the Pope.

The Count and Countess de Jametel live in France.  The marriage is morganatic but tolerated due to the young duchess' "almost inconceivable indiscretion with a groom,  the victim of a scandal" exploited by the German newspapers.

Thus, Duchess Marie could not remain in Germany after her marriage.

The palace servant was paid off with "a considerable sum of money," and exiled to the United States.  Unfortunately for Duchess Marie's family, the young man, whose surname is Hecht, soon returned to Germany.  He opened a beer garden in Hamburg, and exploited his connections with the grand ducal household by hoisting the Mecklenburg-Strelitz flag above his establishment on all major holidays until authorities intervened.
