Princess Madeleine of Sweden will wed British-American Chris O'Neill tomorrow afternoon in Stockholm.   The princess' wedding gown was designed by Valentino.

The first event will be a gala dinner for the invited guests at the Grand Hotel.  This is hosted by the King and Queen.

Pastor von Preussen: Germans need moral guidance

Pastor Philip Prinz von Preussen thinks Germans need moral guidance.  The Lutheran pastor is the only son of Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia, eldest son of the late Prince Louis Ferdinand, and his first wife, Waltraud Freytag.  Prince Friedrich Wilhelm's succession rights (and the rights of his descendants) were lost when he married in 1967.

MPs support succession bill

I came across an interesting article "Support claim for succession Bill" in the February 9, 1982 issue of The Times, while I was looking for something else.

Labour MP Michael English, representing Nottingham West
"predicted" that a "majority of MPs would support his attempt to end discrimination against women in the law of succession to the throne."

Mr. English's proposed legislation, Succession to the Crown Bill, was published on February 8.   The bill would allow for gender equality, the succession of the first born child, regardless of sex.  (At the time, the only country with gender equality was Sweden.)

The law was backed by Labour, Conservatives, Liberals and Social Democrat MPs.   If the law was passed by Parliament,  the first child, "irrespective of its sex," would succeed to the throne.

Mr. English noted that if the Princess of Wales gave birth to a son, the issue "would be deferred for a generation," but if the child was a girl, the matter would become "more urgent."

He has written to Prime Minister Thatcher and the prime ministers of the 16 other Commonwealth countries, where the Queen is the sovereign, "asking whether they disagree with his proposal," or wish to legislate or "consent to his Bill extending to their countries."

But without Government support, the Bill's chances "coming before the Commons for debate in this session are not bright."

It would take another 31 years for a gender equality succession bill to be promulgated and signed into law.

The New York Times reports that King Frederik IX of Denmark today signed the new Constitution, which was "approved by Parliament and ratified by plebiscite May 28."

This is Denmark's fifth constitution.  One of the primary changes is the inclusion of female succession.  Before this change, only males could succeed to the throne. King Frederik and Queen Ingrid have three daughters, Margrethe, Benedikte, and Anne Marie.

Princess Margrethe is now the heiress presumptive. She cannot be the heir apparent because she can be superseded by a younger brother.

She will be known as HRH The Princess Margrethe of Denmark until her 18th birthday, when she will be styled as the Crown Princess of Denmark.

The heir to the throne was the king's younger brother, Prince Knud, who has two sons and a daughter. The prince and his family have been vocal in their disappointment with the change to the succession.

The king has bestowed the title "Hereditary Prince" on his younger brother.

Prince of Asturias defies father

Official notice of the forthcoming marriage between Alfonso, Prince of Asturias, and Edelmira Sampedro, a Cuban commoner, was posted earlier today in Lausanne's City Hall, reports the Chicago Tribune news service.

The announcement will remain posted until June 13, when the couple can wed.

Alfonso and his bride-to-be are both 26 years old. Alfonso is the eldest son of King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who left the country two years ago following the establishment of a republic.  

Edelmira Sampedro is the daughter of a wealthy Cuban merchant.

A spokesman for the King, who now lives at Fontainebleau, France, released a statement: "The king is not happy about the marriage and will not go to the wedding."

This will be the second morganatic marriage by the eldest son of a former ruling family. Last Saturday, in Bonn, Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, eldest son of Crown Prince Wilhelm and grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II, violated family law by marrying Dorothea von Salviati, a commoner.

The Tribune's Madrid correspondent first revealed the romance between the former heir to the throne and the Cuban commoner. On February 9, the paper reported that the prince, a hemophiliac, was a patient in a Lausanne hospital. Miss Sampedro and her mother live in the city. 

The prince said he wants "a little happiness in my life."  The younger Alfonso added, "Let Juan have the throne. I love her and want to marry her.  That's where real happiness is."

Don Juan is Alfonso's younger brother.

When he marries, Alfonso will lose his rights to the throne and his title, Prince of Asturias. He will become known as the Count of Covadonga. 

Although the couple's plans are not known, they may choose to honeymoon in the United States and live in Havana.

Although Alfonso has been described as the heir to the throne, the Chicago Tribune notes that he is not the heir. According to the "best information," the heir has been the third son, Infante Juan, since July 1931, when "a round of abdications was signed at Fontainebleau."  

This happened three months after Spain became a republic.

Juan is serving as a cadet in the Royal Navy.  King Alfonso has "ruled himself out," as he has taken "personal blame" for the events in Spain.

Don Alfonso and his brother, Don Jaime, were also removed as heirs.  Alfonso is a hemophiliac, and his brother is a deaf-mute.

King Alfonso has not given "official confirmation" to the abdications because the Carlist branch of the family has not "publicly renounced their claims to the throne.

More squabbles between the duke and duchess of Orleans

The Duke of Orleans' Paris office has issued a statement denying certain "outrageous fables" published in connection with the Duchess's alimony suit in Brussels, reports the New York Times.

The Duke also asserts that the cause of his marital problems was that "he did not wish to live with his mother-in-law in Austria."

He also makes clear that the Duchess is "in possession of everything belonging to her." He has never had access to her dowry of $240,000, which has been in a London bank since the death of the Duchess' father, Archduke Josef, but the Duchess recently closed the account and moved the funds to Austria.

The Duchess did not receive anything in her father's will.

Two years ago, the Duchess of Orleans left her marital home in Wood Norton, England, and lived with her mother in Austria.  She states she plans to live there "permanently." The Duchess does not desire "a judicial separation," but she is seeking $16,000 in alimony.

The Duke does not desire to reside at Alcsuch Castle with his mother-in-law, Archduchess Clothilde. He plans to live in Belgium or Sicily, and he owns property in both countries.

He has not acceded to his wife's demands, due to the "abnormal conditions" attached to the Duchess' request.  The Duke considers these requests "contrary to the customs of the House of Orleans."

Princess Juliana baptized

Princess Juliana of the Netherlands, the infant daughter of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik, reports the New York Times.   The princess was baptized "in the Lutheran Church to-day, the ceremonial being extremely simple."

The royal guests occupied the front rows of the church in the Hague.  Government officials and members of the diplomatic corps were also present.

The baptismal font was made of "silver, fashioned in Gothic style."  Following the "long sermon," based on the Gospel of St. Luke,  the infant princess was presented by her mother for baptism.  

The choir "chanted the 134th Psalm."

Shortly before the ceremony, the Queen and her husband, were driven to the church in a carriage, "which ran into another vehicle."  It took some time for the horses to be disentangled, leading to some confusion.  Queen Wilhelmina "remained cool throughout the incident" and emerged from the carriage "amid the cheers of those present."

[note: I believe the New York Times got it wrong about the faith.  Juliana would have been baptized according to the rites of the Reformed Church, which bears some similarity to the Lutheran faith.]

The funeral of Landgrave Moritz of Hesse

 

The funeral of the late Landgrave Moritz of Hesse was held earlier today at the St. Johanneskirche in Kronberg-im-Taunus.  The 86-year-old head of the House of Hesse died in a Frankfurt-am-Main hospital on May 23 after a long battle with lung disease.

Moritz, a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria, was the eldest child of Prince Philipp, Landgrave of Hesse and Princess Mafalda of Savoy.

The mourners included Queen Sofia of Spain and her brother, King Constantine II of the Hellenes and King Simeon of Bulgaria.  The Bulgarian monarch and the late Landgrave were first cousins as their mothers were sisters.  Another first cousin, Prince Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, was also present for the funeral.

Other guests included Princess Benedikte of Denmark and her husband, Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, whose sister, Princess Tatiana, was once married to Prince Moritz, Hereditary Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittengein-Berleburg, Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg,  Princess Alexandra of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and her husband, Count Jefferson-Friedrich von Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth , Duchess Marie Alix of Schleswig-Holstein, the Prince and Princess of Hohenzollern, the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe, Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands,  Prince Georg Friedrich and Princess Sophie of Prussia, Prince Ernst August, Jr., of Hanover, the Margrave and Margravine of Baden, the Hereditary Prince and Princess of Baden, Prince Ludwig and Princess Marianne of Baden, the Duke of Bavaria, Duchess Elisabeth in Bavaria and her husband, Dr. Daniel Terberger,  the Duke in Bavaria,  Prince Karl of Hesse, Count Hans Veit zu Toerring Jettenbach, Princess Sarvath of Jordan, Princess Ingeborg of Schleswig-Holstein, the Prince and Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, and the Hereditary Prince and Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, Count Anton-Wolfgang von Faber-Castell, Prince Ferdinand von Bismarck,  Princess Irina of Hesse (niece) and her husband, Count Alexander von Schönburg-Glauchau, Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the Hereditary Prince and Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duke Carl and Duke Friedrich of Württemberg, Prince Armin and Princess Traute of Lippe, Prince and Princess Karl-Emich of Leiningen, the Princess of Leiningen,  among other German royal and princely families.

Several of the late Landgrave's grandsons took part in the funeral, carrying his honors and medals.   All four of his children, Princess Mafalda,  Donatus, the new Landgrave, Princess Madeleine and Prince Philipp, and his sister, Princess Elisabeth, Countess von Oppersdorff were present for the ceremony.  His former wife, Princess Tatiana, accompanied the family.  The couple maintained a friendly relationship even after their divorce.  Her name was listed in the official death announcement.

After the funeral, the casket was taken to the chapel at Kronberg for burial.

During the final years of his life,  the Landgrave lived at Schloss Wolfsgarten in Langen, near Darmstadt, which he had inherited after the death of Princess Margaret of Hesse and by Rhine, whose husband had adopted Prince Moritz as his heir.  Prince Ludwig was the last male member of the Hesse and By Rhine grand ducal family.

Crown Prince Alexander exclusively for Telegraf, after Oplenac ceremony, speaks about the Karadjordjeviscs funeral, Serbia as constitutional monarchy, EU negotiations opening date and his family’s unity
Crown Prince Alexander II Karadjordjevic speaks for Telegraf about how he feels now when the legacy of Peter I Karadjordjevic has been fulfilled, about Serbia and the EU, restoration of monarchy, as well as the necessary help by the state to the dynasty, in his first interview after the funeral of the mortal remains of King Peter II Karadjordjevic, Queen Maria, Queen Alexandra and Prince Andrej, in the crypt of St. George’s Church in Oplenac.
Crown Prince Alexander, the Head of the Royal House of Karadjordjevic and legitimate heir of the Serbian throne, who has already been addressed as „King“ by Patriarch Irinej at Oplenac, says for our portal that the interest for constitutional parliamentary monarchy has always existed, and that Serbia as monarchy is a better solution for the XXI century.
According to the earlier survey by Telegraf, but also by many other public opinion research agencies, 60% of the examinees has stated they would like to see Serbia with monarchist form of government. Crown Prince Alexander II says for Telegraf he is glad because of such result, and that he and his family are much moved.
1.What are your impressions after the funeral and fulfilment of King Peter I’s wish for all Karadjordjevic's to be buried in one place?
It was very moving for all my family and a great satisfaction that all family members are now resting in peace in the crypt of the Royal Mausoleum. We are especially very proud to have fulfilled King Peter I wishes. It took time, but it happened.
2.Serbian state has finally stood by the Karadjordjevic's and helped in the transfer of the mortal remains. How much has that support meant to you?
The support from President Nikolic was very strong and wonderful, and with the help and advice of Professor Oliver Antic the process moved forward. Also with the help and support of Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, Foreign Minister Mr Ivan Mrkic, the Commission for the Return of Family Members much was accomplished in getting things to move forward. I am very grateful our Patriarch Irinej for the amazing support from the church.  In the United States the support from Chicago was excellent with our lawyer Mr Tom Karacic who dealt  expertly with the legal side and the required applications for King Peter and Prince Andrej to be exhumed. Our Ambassador in Washington Mr Vladimir Petrovic and our Consul General Mr Desko Nikitovic were excellent and worked very hard.  In the United Kingdom Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave her gracious permission for the exhumation of Queen Maria so the process went very smoothly. Our Ambassador in London, our Consul General Ljiljana Zarubica were excellent liaised very well with the British authorities. We are grateful to our airline JAT and staff for their great help. In Greece regarding my mother Queen Alexander the Prime Minister Mr Antonis Samaras and Foreign Minister Mr Dimitris Avramopoulos provided superb help and support, our Ambassador in Athens Mr Dragan Zupanjevac liaised expertly with the Greek authorities. Everyone was a great team and my family too. We succeeded and the public clearly saw the results last Sunday 26 May.
3.We have witnessed many people coming to the Royal Chapel to pay their respect to the Karadjordjevic's, also a great number of people have attended the funeral at Oplenac, are you glad that more and more citizens of Serbia is turning to monarchy again?
It was very moving to see so many people who came to pay their respects to the family in the Royal Chapel in Dedinje, my family and I were very touched by this. There has always been much interest in Constitutional Monarchy and I am always grateful for the very warm interest.
4.Is Serbia going to get the accession negotiations with the EU opening date?
I would hope so towards the end of June. Our Government has been working very hard to achieve this and we all know that it will be a big boost for Serbia to be a member of the EU and take part in the decision making and especially also open up a huge market for our economy and build friendship and brotherhood. Our Government also has the difficult task to work on this very important matter which so close to all our hearts.
5.Just to make it clear regarding all the rumours – is the family of Karadjordjevic united and are there any differences within it?
No doubt about that - as best as can be. It is clear and visible that we are 98% strongly united and that is what is important. Therefore no matter what we move forward united.
6.Do you think it is realistic to expect that Serbia will one day become a parliamentary monarchy again?
There is no doubt that the interest for Constitutional Monarchy is strong. However it is important to note that our politicians and people must feel comfortable about it. It is a positive political solution for Serbia and it will bring us on par with other Constitutional Monarchies like Sweden, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Canada etc…
7.SPO leader Vuk Drašković has stated at the State funeral it is time for you to be involved in politics, in order to help promoting the idea of monarchy, so that it would be established as soon as possible, are you planning to do so?
The principle of Constitutional Monarchy is that the government rules with the Prime Minister in at the helm along with his cabinet following elections. The King reigns and is above politics, he is not a member of a political party and this is very important because he provides unity, continuity and stability.
8.Patriarch Irinej has publicly supported the idea of Serbia as a parliamentary monarchy, how important is it to you and are you going to initiate resolving this issue?
It is very important, but requires a lot of work to move forward. His Holiness Patriarch Irinej and other religious leaders are very sympathetic to Constitutional Monarchy. Patriarch Pavle officially supported Constitutional Monarchy in 2003, and this is a continuation of the relationship that was built centuries ago. In Serbia, both Church and Crown are symbols of continuity, stability and unity, they embrace all people without exception based on their personal choices.
9.Are you happy with the work of the Advisory bodies of the Crown?
As you know, there are three bodies: Crown Council, Privy Council and Crown Cabinet. Any idea is as strong as people united around it. Sometimes, the credibility of particular names of academicians and professors, members of the Crown Council speak for themselves. It is not surprising that many of them are internationally recognised. The Privy Council is a much smaller advisory body and active on a daily basis, whereas the Crown Cabinet gathers specialists on various areas, and they give their valuable advice whenever needed. In the more than 20 years of their existence, a lot of good initiatives were proposed and supported.
10.Many internationally distinguished guests and Royal Family members were at Oplenac. What are The Royal Palace and Karadjordjevic family specifically doing to improve Serbia’s reputation in the world?
We are proud to promote Serbia abroad and to foreign visitors and investors. We are invited to many foreign functions and events. We are always asked about Serbia and we do have the golden opportunity do positive talking about our country. We are proud to enjoy equal respect and friendship domestically and abroad. Just look at the teamwork and cooperation both domestically and internationally to bring the remains of my family to Serbia. Without mutual respect and cooperation both domestically and internationally it would have been impossible. We are very happy to have so many good friends both domestically and internationally.
11.Do you think the road of accession to the EU is important for Serbia?
Yes as it is as I mentioned earlier.I know very well that there are misgivings and doubts, and they must be heard. There are soon to be 28 members of the EU with Croatia being the latest. Serbia is getting surrounded with EU countries. We seriously need the huge EU market to trade and export our goods. We need to have more jobs thanks to especially more investment and that would be thanks to the EU. We will continue to have a superlative relationship with Russia. We are not a tax free mini haven like Monaco nor a San Remo, because we as Serbia cannot simply be isolated like an island in the Pacific from Europe and the EU decision making. It is about time we be heard as Serbia and we should be proud of that.
12.How far has the restitution of the Karadjordjevic's’ property gone?
We are still working on this very important issue and there will be progress and cooperation.
13.It is well known that the Karadjordjevic's do not receive appanage from the state, what is the source of your finances?
I am glad to say that I always worked to earn my living.
14.Do you, and to what extent, need the state’s help, and in which areas particularly?
Yes, we need the state to help with the maintenance of the historical property so that it does not deteriorate. We are all proud of the Royal Palace and White Palace, and they are beautiful, they are our the Serbian Versailles and they are open to the public, but we need the state to help with the constant repairs and maintenance since it is clearly in the interest of Serbia. The  palaces are very popular so we must continue preserve them for the public both domestic and foreign to enjoy. We have wonderful art and architecture and we should be proud of it just like all nations are of their heritage and history.
