HRH Princess Friederike (Frederica) Sophie Marie Henriette Amelie Therese of Hanover was born on January 8, 1848 in Hanover. She was the elder daughter of King Georg V of Hanover and Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenberg. Her father was born HRH Prince George of Cumberland, the only child of HRH Prince Ernst August, Duke of Cumberland, and Princess Frederica of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

She was also a British princess with the style of Her Highness, as she was the great-granddaughter of George III. Her father was Queen Victoria's first cousin.
