remains of Queen Helen brought to Romania

At 11:00 a.m, on Friday a Romanian Air Force plane landed at Otopeni airport in Bucharest carrying the remains of Queen Mother Helen, former wife of King Carol II and mother of King Michael.  Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, Prince Radu, Princess Sofia and Princess Marie, and representatives from the Roman Catholic Church, the Greek Catholic Church, the Armenian church, the Muslim faith and government leaders were present at the airport.

Queen Helen died on November 29, 1982 at Lausanne, Switzerland.  She was buried in Lausanne.

After a brief religious service at the airport,  Queen Helen's casket was taken to the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest for several hours where people could pay their respect.   The final journey was to the Curtea Arges Monastery for reburial, next to her son, King Michael.

A funeral service and the reburial took place earlier today at the Curtea des Arges.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis released a message to the press:

“Queen Mother Helen is a powerful symbol of dignity, honor and courage and a special figure of moral conduct in the dark twentieth century. She returns home after 71 years, in the lands of the country she loved and defended in times of restraint, where she will rest in honor, in the pantheon of the Kings and Queens of Romania. Bringing her home, next to her son King Michael I, is not only an act of historical justice and dignity, but a necessary step for the recovery and completion of contemporary Romania's values."

It seems Nicolae, the former Prince, is at least partly back in the family business. And why shouldn't he. He seems to work out his own, modern way of being a royal, very much dedicated to his country. With a classy, intelligent wife who complements him nicely. I think they are the true future of the Romanian royal family.
