Duke Ludwig Albrecht Maria Philipp Peter Ferdinand Karl Gottfried Georg Alfons of Württemberg, the elder brother of Duke Carl, who is head of the royal house, died after a long illness on October 6 at Weingarten (Ravensburg). He was 88 years old.
Duke Ludwig was born at Stuttgart on October 23, 1930, the first son and second child of Philipp, Duke of Württemberg, and his second wife Archduchess Rosa of Austria.
He chose to renounce his rights of succession and inheritance on June 29, 1959 as his forthcoming marriage did not comply with the then House laws. His younger brother, Duke Carl, became the heir, and succeeded as head of the house in 1975.
Duke Ludwig married Baroness Adelheid von Bodman on February 16, 1960. This marriage ended in divorce in 1970. Two years later, in August 1972, he married Angelika Kiessing. This marriage also ended in divorce, in 1988.
Duke Ludwig was an interior designer.
He is survived by his four children, Christian Albrecht, Isabelle, Sibylla and Christiane (Frau Titzing), at least three grandchildren, including Sylvie Herzogin and Louis Herzog von Württemberg, and his siblings: Maria Christina (Princess Georg of Liechtenstein), Helene (Marquesa Pallavinci). Elisabeth (Princess Antoine of Bourbon-Two Sicilies,) Marie Therese (Duchess of Montpensier) and Carl, Duke of Württemberg.
His memorial service will take place on October 19 at Altshausen.
