Garter Day 2019

The Kings of Spain and the Netherlands were installed earlier today as Stranger Knights of the Garter, the oldest order of Chivalry in the United Kingdom.

The order of Garter is exclusive as only 24 people can be members of the Order at any one time.  At this time there are 23 Knights and Ladies of the Garter, with one vacancy.

Members of the Royal Family and Foreign sovereigns are not included in the count.  Foreign sovereigns who are members of the Order are called Stranger Knights and Ladies Companions.

King Philippe of the Belgians and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg have not yet received the Garter as neither have made a State Visit to the United Kingdom.  King Philippe's father, King Albert, does not have the Garter as he did not make a State Visit during his reign.
