King George II lay in state in Athens
April 4, 1947
King George II of the Hellenes lay in state today in the Athens Greek Orthodox cathedral, reports the Associated Press.
Only six months after his restoration to the throne, King George died of heart trouble in Athens on April 1.
His funeral will be held on Easter morning. Among the royals who are expected to attend the funeral are the late King's sister, Queen Mother Helen of Romania, Crown Prince Olav of Norway, and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.
Courts have been suspended and other government departments are on a reduced working schedule. The official mourning will last for three months.
