Queen Sofia of Spain has canceled all of her engagements, the Royal Palace announced today, to be with her younger sister, Princess Irene.  The 87-year-old mother of King Felipe VI was scheduled to carry out engagements in Palma de Mallorca.

Princess Irene, 83, is the youngest of the three children of the late King Paul I of the Hellenes and Princess Friederike (Frederica) of Hanover.

In September 2025,  sources confirmed that Princess Irene was suffering "rapidly advancing cognitive deterioration."

Queen Sofia has spent as much time as she can with her younger sister and has been supported by her two daughters, Infanta Elena and Infanta Cristina.

On December 19, 2025, Sofia suffered the loss of her best friend and cousin, Princess Tatiana Radziwill.  Last weekend, the queen, accompanied by her three children, attended a memorial service in Paris to honor the life of Princess Tatiana.
