June 2, 1953

Today is the 56th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation. My parents were on their honeymoon in Virginia, as my dad was in the US Navy and stationed in Norfolk. My parents eloped -- sort of - but it is not as if mom and dad ran off to a justice of the peace. They got married at a Lutheran church in Silver Spring, Maryland, and then went on their Virginia honeymoon. You might wonder where I got this interest in royalty. Many years after the honeymoon, my mom told me nothing happened during the honeymoon because she wanted to watch the Coronation on TV -- my dad had only a few days leave and, drat! the leave coincided with the Coronation. When I was all grown up, I asked my dad about this, telling him what mom told me years before ... he just rolled his eyes, smiled, and said grwww rrww! The real honeymoon was during the next leave ... I will let you figure that out as I was born 12.5 months after my parents' wedding!

My grandparents were living in Liverpool at the time (my family's Australian) and took their little six year old son (my dad) down to London on the train. The day formed strong impressions and he talks fondly of the memories. There are films of Coronation day on the Royal Channel on YouTube; Dad loved seeing them, he said it was just like he remembered it.
