Hubertus Stephan husband of Princess Tatiana of Hohenlohe-Langenburg

HSH Princess Tatiana of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Hubertus Stephan

Hubertus Stephan, the husband of Princess Tatiana of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, was killed in an accident in his off-road vehicle.  His two young sons, Wolf, 4 and Carl, 6, witnessed the accident, according to several German news reports.
Mr. Stephan was 47 years old.

The accident took place "on a steep slope," in Aurach near Kitzbühel, Austria at about 5 p.m., on May 10.  Mr. Stephan had seen the danger of the off-road tour in advance and got his sons out of the car in time.  He then drove his Mercedes down a wet meadow down a hill, where he lost control of his car.  The car overturned several times and crashed into a tree.

Mr. Stephan suffered fatal injuries in the crash.  His two sons were cared for by a crisis intervention team until their mother arrived.

Princess Tatiana of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, 43, is one of two daughters of Prince Andreas and Princess Luise of Hohenlohe-Langenburg.  Prince Andreas's mother, Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark, was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh's eldest sister.    The Prince of Wales and Princess Tatjana are second cousins.

Princess Tatiana and Hubertus Stephan were married in Munich on October 9, 2010.

Mr. Stephan was the son of Thomas Friedrich Christian Stephan and Maria Johanna Denk.  He was born at Gräfelfing on November 21, 1970.

He is survived by his wife, Princess Tatjana, and their two sons Carl Casper Stephan,(January 22, 2012, at Munich) and  Wolf Thomas Dres Stephan (October 5, 2013, at Graefelfing)

Oh man....what is going on?! Does she know Duchess Marie? Maybe the two can comfort each other.
The details are a bit foggy. How was it he was able to stop the vehicle, get his sons out but then he went back in? I'm a bit confused

This makes no sense, why would he continue driving if was unsafe to do so?

Not sure but I think off the road vehicles were coming his way and he had to get out of the way and his only way out was dangerous.

Very, very odd. Quite why he got back in his vehicle and continued dtivind when it wasn't safe enough for his children.

What is an “off the road tour”? Not clear exactly what happened....why didn’t he just wait with the children??

The German newspapers said that Mr. Stefan was testing out his new Mercedes SUV and let his sons out of the car before going off-road down a hill in a wooded area. He misjudged the incline, lost control of the vehicle, rolled over several times before hitting a tree.

Thanks Barbara that's a more coherent account than previously given. However still odd to undertake the off road while leaving the boys on the roadside. Why not off road when he didn't have the boys with him.

I imagine it wasn't a public road and Mr. Stephan left his sons with a staff member (someone had to have called the emergency servuces), thinking that he would go downhill quickly, then drive back up the road to get them. However, this is only a guess.
