Queen Mary dead at 85

Baptism of the Hon. George Lascelles

all photos: Marlene A. Eilers Koenig collection

Buckingham Palace has posted the following bulletin: "While sleeping peacefully, Queen Mary died at 20 minutes past 10 o'clock."   She died at Marlborough House.

This was the "fourth and last of a series" posted during the day, informing the public that Queen Mary's end "could not be far away.

Queen Mary "lived through two World Wars and a series of personal tragedies without bowing her regal head," died at 10:20 in the evening.  She was 85 years old.

She was the widow of King George V, who died in 1936, and the grandmother of the present Queen Elizabeth II, who succeeded her father in February of last year.

The earlier medical bulletins note the New York Times, told of the Queen's "restless night," the "serious weakening" of her heart, and her "ebbing strength."

Marlene, do you have any information about the tiara's Her Majesty wore in photos 3, 6 and 22? Thank you for the intersting post.

Hi, Debbie! I think I can help a bit...

#3 is the Boucheron Diamond Loop Tiara; it was broken up and used to make the Delhi Durbar Tiara

#6 is the Ladies of England Tiara; it was broken up and used to make the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara

#22 is still around; it's the palmette/honeysuckle tiara that the Duchess of Gloucester wears

thank you so much, Ella, for answering.

On a different note, I see visually a lot of similarity in features to that of Queen Ellizabeth II. Previously I thought The Queen Mother (Elizabeth) was the more similar, but now I wonder.

Cheers from Sunny warm Marrakech.

Looking at those photos I now wonder who has more influence in Queen Elizabeth II's features, Queen Mary or The Queen Mother (Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon). I used to think the later, now I am not sure.

Cheers and all the best from sunny and warm Marrakech

I've always thought HM looks like her grandmother Queen Mary. I've never seen that much resemblance between the Queen and her mother. And I have always thought you could include the Princess Royal, Princess Anne into that mix. I even think she resembles Queen Mary.

wow, that last picture of Queen Mary looks so very much like the present Queen Elizabeth! i've never thought they looked all that similar, and even some of the other pictures i can't really see the resemblance in, but that last one sure did make the comparison striking in my eyes.

just out of curiosity, i know you have written a lot about the royals, and obviously have done a great deal of research, but i was wondering how you made actual relationships with members of european royal families. you've been invited to certain events that i'd imagine you have to know someone important to be invited to, and i've just always wondered how that came about. i'm not generally the kind to sit over a cup of coffee & talk, but i imagine you could keep me entertained for hours! (hey, i'm in fairfax county! :-P) of course i'd never ask for you to go into details which you or they would want to remain private, i'm just asking how you made personal contact with them. and who they are exactly... like this event coming up you are traveling to, is there one specific person you know or the whole family or what? also, i don't have anything i'm going to buy from you on amazon, but i do have a paypal account and would like to make a small donation to your travel fund (if i remember correctly, you are going in may, right?) - how would i go about doing that? i'm assuming every bit helps?

Is that Princess Alice of Battenburg, Prince Phillip's mother (first child on the left) in the wedding photo?

Marlene Eilers Koenig said...

yes, alice was one of Mary's bridesmaids ...

Michelle - the contact I have is due to my book, Queen Victoria's descendants.
