Marlene forgive my ignorance here but ~ do the German royal families retain any real wealth? As in land holdings? Cash? Art? When I lived in Germany year ago they were never in the news. I assume many have made their personal fortunes in real jobs such as banking. Thanks in advance. I do see some families still in the line of sucession in other countries but wonder how they even survive.

Yes, many of the former ruling and royal families have great wealth .. still live in their castles. German newspapers don't do a lot of the celeb stuff, apart from Bunte and other magazines. In the 1920s, many of the former ruling families set up trusts to protect assets, etc., because of taxation. Legally, there are no royals (titles are a part of their surname). The Families in the west were able to protect and grow assets after the wars -- after world war II, the eastern families lost so much to the Soviets and East Germans.
