The Austria emperor, attired in a Prussian uniform and wearing the Order of the Black Eagle. The arrival ceremony took place at the railroad station, and was followed by "a triumphant progress" by carriage to the Hofburg, where Franz Joseph's wife, Elisabeth, welcomed the German Emperor. After a few words with the Empress and her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Stephanie, the Kaiser received visits from "distinguised persons."

In the afternoon, Wilhelm met with Prince Philip of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the Bishop of Prague. Following the evening banquet, the guests retired to the Rittersaal for a "grand concert." Wilhelm and Elisabeth "entered the hall arm in arm," and were followed by the Emperor and the Crown Princess.

The evening culminated with an "imperial reception" according to a report published in the Los Angeles Times.
The German emperor was not accompanied by his wife, Auguste Viktoria. In July, the German empress gave birth to her fifth son, Oskar. One month earlier, Wilhelm had succeeded to the throne following the death of his father, Friedrich III.
