Reported dead -but wasn't.  Marlene A Eilers Koenig collection

June 4, 1904

Princess Marie Louise of Baden, elder daughter of the Duke of Cumberland, died at Gmunden this morning, reports the New York Times.

Princess Marie Louise, the wife of Prince Maximilian of Baden, underwent surgery for appendicitis on Monday, and "was progressing satisfactorily until yesterday afternoon," when she suffered a relapse that "culminated in her entirely unexpected death."

Gmunden in Upper Austria is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cumberland, and was "enjoying a holiday in honor" of the Duke of Cumberland's younger daughter, Princess Alexandra's forthcoming marriage to the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
Princess Mary of Hannover, daughter of King Georg V, died on June 4, 1904

The marriage will not be postponed, but the illuminations and processions have been cancelled and the street "decorations are being removed."

[The news reports killed off the wrong princess.  It was Marie Louise's Aunt, Princess Mary of Hanover, who died on June 4 at the age of 54.]
