Franz Josef's Diamond Jubilee

May 7, 1908

Kaiser Wilhelm II and the heads of Germany's princely houses are now in Vienna to "present their congratulations" to Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, who is celebrating his diamond jubilee, reports the New York Times.

Earlier this afternoon, Wilhelm II and the Princes were received by Franz Josef at the Schönbrunn Palace.  The Kaiser made a "brief speech," and Franz Josef replied, "expressing gratification" at the honor of receiving the visiting royals.

Afterward, Wilhelm II "called upon the archdukes" and Franz Josef "took a long carriage ride" through Vienna to visit the German princes.

They were standing on the edge of the abyss, an about to fall in, but they had no idea.
