March 5, 1922
It's official now. King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark have announced the engagement of their elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, to Princess Olga of Greece and Denmark, eldest daughter of Prince and Princess Nicholas.
In 1917, Copenhagen newspapers reported that King Christian was visiting King Gustav V to discuss a possible marriage between Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Margaretha of Sweden, eldest daughter of Prince Carl of Sweden and his wife, Princess Ingeborg of Denmark. Some months later, according to the New York Times, King Christian and King Gustav met again, and a "report gained circulation" that the Crown Prince was going to marry Prince Carl's second daughter, Martha, then 17.
In 1920, there "was a rumor" that Princess Olga was going to marry William B. Leeds, Jr., the son of the American "tin plate king," whose mother is Princess Anastasia, the wife of Prince Christopher of Greece. Young Leeds married Olga's cousin, Princess Xenia of Russia, last October.
Princess Olga is a granddaughter of the late King George I of Greece, who was born Prince Wilhelm of Denmark.
