HRH Prince Frederik of Nassau (2002-2025)

@PolG Foundation

HRH Prince Robert of Luxembourg has announced the death of his youngest child, HRH Prince Frederik of Nassau, who died at the age of 22 in Paris on March 1st.

"It is with a very heavy heart that my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, The POLG Foundation Founder and Creative Director, Frederik.

Last Friday, February 28th, on “Rare Disease Day”, our beloved son called us in to his room to speak to him for one last time. Frederik found the strength and the courage to say goodbye to each of us in turn – his brother, Alexander; his sister, Charlotte; me; his three cousins, Charly, Louis, and Donall; his brother-in-law, Mansour; and finally, his Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Mark. He had already spoken all that was in his heart to his extraordinary mother, who had not left his side in 15 years. After gifting each of us with our farewells – some kind, some wise, some instructive – in true Frederik fashion, he left us collectively with a final long-standing family joke. Even in his last moments, his humour, and his boundless compassion, compelled him to leave us with one last laugh….to cheer us all up."

 HRH Prince Frederiik Henry Douglas Marie of Nassai was born in Aix-en Provence, France, on March 18. 2002.   He was the youngest child of HRH Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Julie Ongaro.   At age 14, Prince Frederik was diagnosed with PolG, a mitochondrial disease.

"In our family, there exists life before July 26th, 2016 and life after. On that date, our then-14-year-old son, Frederik, was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease, a genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, in turn causing organ dysfunction and failure. Frederik’s particular disease is due to two mutations of his PolG gene. It is as if Frederik has a faulty battery that never fully recharges and is in a constant state of depletion."

HRH Prince Robert of Luxembourg is one of Grand Duke Henri's first cousins.  He is the son of the late HRH Prince Charles of Luxembourg (1927-1977) and his American wife, Joan Douglas Dillon.  In 1994, Prince Robert married an American, Julie Ongaro.  They live in Switzerland and Paris, where Prince Robert serves as President of Domaine Clarence Dillon.  He succeeded his mother as president in 2008.  Domaine Clarence Dillon was founded in 1935 by Robert's great-grandfather, Clarence Dillon, after he purchased Château Haut-Brion.
