Prince Albert of Monaco told People magazine that his wife, Princess Charlene is "receiving treatment in a facility 'outside of Monaco.' "
Charlene, 43, decided to "seek medical care" several days after returning to Monaco. This decision was made "jointly by the couple" and in consultation with the princess' two brothers.
Albert told the magazine that his wife suffers from "exhaustion, both emotional and physical." He believes the treatment will require "clinical care lasting several weeks at minimum."
Charlene returned to Monaco on November 8 after spending six months in South Africa, following several surgeries. Albert said her return "went pretty well in the first few hours, and then it became pretty evident that she was unwell."
She pulled out of the National Day celebration on November 19, due to "profound general fatigue."
The 63-year-old Sovereign Prince said his wife's health is the result of "several factors which are private matters. She was clearly exhausted, physically and emotionally. She was overwhelmed and couldn't face official duties, life in general or even family life."
Charlene suffered an ENT infection in early May. This led to several corrective surgeries, including a sinus lift, during the next six months. She had traveled to South Africa to discuss rhinoceros poaching in southern Africa.
"Because I know there are rumors out there, let me say: This is not COVID," Albert said. "And it's not cancer-related. It's not a personal relationship issue. And if you want to discuss another speculation, it isn't related to plastic surgery or facial work at all."
She was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia in January 1978. She was 12 when her parents moved to South Africa. She was a competitive swimmer for South Africa, winning gold and silver medals at the 1999 All-Africa Games. Charlene represented South Africa in the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth games and was a member of the 4x100 medley relay in the 2000 Olympic Games in 2002. A shoulder injury prevented Charlene from qualifying for the 2008 Summer Games.
Charlene and Albert were introduced in 2000 at a swimming meet in Monaco. Their first official appearance as a couple took place six years later at the Opening Ceremonies for the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Their engagement was announced on June 23, 2010, with the civil and religious weddings taking place on July 1 and July 2, 2011, respectively.
Before the wedding, Charlene, who was raised Protestant, converted to Roman Catholicism. It was also announced that she was learning French and the Monequese dialect, but is more comfortable speaking English.
On December 10, 2014, Charlene gave birth to twins, Princess Gabriella and Hereditary Prince Jacques.
In March the princess attended the memorial service of King Goodwill Zwelithini in Nongoma, South Africa. But her most recent official engagements in Monaco took place on January 26 and 27, 2021 where she and Prince Albert and their two children attended celebrations in honor of Monaco's patron saint, Saint Devote.
At the princely family's annual Christmas party, Princess Charlene was spotted with a "half hawk" haircut instead of her usual bob. One side and the back of her head were shaved. The hairstyle certainly caused commentary and criticism.
This haircut was my decision. "It seems that it has provoked all kinds of comments. But it turns out that I wanted it for a long time, the style pleases me. That's all.” The princess added: "Certainly, of all the members of royal families, I'm probably the one who has tried the most different hairstyles, and I'll continue. That's my choice,” the royal said, adding: “The remarks of ‘But what is she doing?’ and ‘But it’s not royal!’ - I know these all too well.
“And I have nothing to say to them, except that we’re in 2021 and that in these times which are so troubling, so difficult, there are other, much more important subjects which deserve our attention," Princess Charlene told People magazine.
